Ex-New Order star Peter Hook sues bandmates

Former New Order bassist Peter Hook is suing his ex-bandmates for millions of pounds in a bitter row over royalties.

Hook claims he has lost out on more than £2.3m since the three other band members set up a company without him to handle the band's income in 2011.

Hook has accused Bernard Sumner and Stephen and Gillian Morris of "pillaging" the pop group's assets.

The trio say they have treated Hook fairly and that the guitarist's stake of the royalties is reasonable.

At a High Court hearing, Judge David Cooke ruled that Hook was not acting out of "spite" and cleared the way for him to take his complaints to a full trial.

I think this will end up the same way as Laurence Tolhurst's suit against The Cure.

I wonder how much Peter Hook gives New Order for the tours he has done for the New Order albums.

BTW, if you haven't read Bernard Sumner's Chapter and Verse book, it's a good read. In the book, he mentions that everyone in the band always got one vote, so if three people voted one way, I guess tough luck to the one vote going the other way.

Well, I have to apologize to Peter Hook.

After reading two of his books, and Deborah Curtis', I'm going to lean on his side over Barney's. There's a lot of he-said she-said, but a couple of comments that Debbie wrote made me choose Hooky.

Having said that, I don't know all the details of the lawsuit. Hooky said something about all four of them being in a company that dealt with the publishing rights. After he left, the other three started a new company without him, and somehow, that is freezing him out of the royalties. I haven't heard any updates of the lawsuit.

Anyways, Barney should read Hooky's books (Hooky has stated that he read Barney's), and the two should make up. The group never really talked about the internal troubles or tried to work things out amongst themselves. New New Order is not the same or as interesting.

The bad thing with Bernard, is that he's not the same person who used to be. I have watched videos from their live concerts from the 1985-1987 period and Bernard was a totally different man back then. Skinny, going on stage shirtless, insulting the crowd, and even blowing up his own lyrics. Since the first reunion of New Order in 1998, he became a fat middle-aged man, who dances like that as well. Hooky on the other hand hasn't changed much.

Not to mention, Bernard had aged suddenly since then. When he was 30, he was looking 20 at most, but once he turned 45 he was looking...50. What happened to his 30s and 40s?

Money, maybe. After the demise of Factory, New Order started getting paid, and maybe Barney turned into a fat cat.

Hooky sees himself as a blue collar guy, so I guess he always looked a bit rough.

There was a picture I came across once, where Peter Hook was reading Bernard's book on his toilet seat. It was posted on his Twitter account and it was very funny. Does anyone have it?

Hey, so any concerts that NewOrder is playing will be without Peter Hook? That's like switching Coke to New Coke. It might taste good, but I need the Classic recipe! 8)

To be fair,I saw Hook in 1998-ish with Monaco and he looked horribly old, paunchy and wearing a Hawaiian shirt with a wretched tan. He looks much fitter recently. But yes Barney looks like he needs to use a walker once he gets offstage

That might have been when Hooky was all about drugs and drink. He's cleaned up since those days ... according to him, anyways :) .

From the group, only Stephen seems to have aged decently. Gillian also aged pretty badly and nowadays she looks like she's older than him.

As for Bernard...he was also in drugs during the 80s-90s. Yet, he was looking better back then.

Thankfully , looks like this fight is over with. I recall one judge just advising them to settle !

What has divided New Order /Joy Division fans more is Peter Hook forming the band 'The Light' and playing both Joy Division and New Order sets live around the world.
I have seen Peter Hook and The light in concert twice, and thought that they were great. Hooky has mellowed since the times I saw New Order in the 1980's, perhaps hitting 60 and going sober has helped. I honestly am not in a position to comment who was in the right over the legal dispute, but I have enjoyed seeing Hooky and would be pleased to go to his next gig locally. Have lost interest in New Order's music after 'Republic' from 1993.

Thanks for the link.

Yeah, Hooky has always loved playing live. Barney, not so much.

It's not drama. It's just a guy wanting to get rid of some past baggage.
