Do you prefer bands discovered pre- or post-mtv debut

MTV debuted August 1981. When you think of the new wave / post-punk you like most, did you discover those groups from MTV, or was it earlier? I guess what I'm asking is when did the new wave era kick off for YOU?

I always think of it being earlier, like 1979. B-52s debut, this timeframe. Gang of Four, 2-tone, London Calling... that's MY year zero.

However, I think it's equally valid for people to think of it kicking off with the early MTV era... Duran, flock of seagulls, kajagoogoo, yahoo, INXS shaboo shabah.

Your thoughts? Don't bother linking to someone else's definition! I want YOUR thoughts!!
