Favorite Club 90s Dance & Electro Trax

Postby 2Nu » Thu Nov 10, 2005 2:38 am

Okee.. at Blir's prodding (been planning to post this for a while)
I'm gonna run down a list of my personal faves from the decade that had me pretty much not going to clubs (y'know, the working massive overtime to pay the first house mortgage and student loans while trying to sustain the whole love & marriage thang).
Nevertheless, that didn't stop me from taking in (and having downtime club volume mixing sessions at home) all this cheezy but soo.. soo.. intoxicating dance music that came out to serve as a perfect foil to all that screaming angry grunge & alternative that was saturating the airwaves back then.(Hopefully not duping too many trax from the other thread lists)

NOTE: As a treat for U folks I can post some of the lesser or forgotten tracks from that era at your request (I have them all). [;)]

Please, PLEASE try to suspend your 'Macarena' inspired prejudices and consider the following trax that IMHO helped define the genre.

I'm gonna cherry pick to try to keep the lists reasonably short.

Let's start off with a fab CD 'Move This' that came out in 1990 that features a petite redhead Brit femme (former) pop phenom by the name of Cathy Dennis who definitely cashed in on the Madonna 'Vogue' production values that were all the rage then. Some admittingly Debby Gibsonesque vocals but with infectious dance grooves nonetheless.

Track #1 Just Another Dream

Track #2 All Night Long (Touch Me)

Track #3 C'mon Get My Love

Next is 'Red Hot + Dance' a 1992 AIDS charity comp that featured a host of great dance trax remixes. (A great one to have in your collection)

Track #1 George Michael - 'Too Funky'

Track #5 Seal - 'Crazy'

Track #6 PM Dawn - 'Set Adrift on Memory Bliss' (Richie Rich Mix)

Track #7 Lisa Stansfield - Change (Metamorphosis Mix)

Track #9 Sabrina Johnson - Peace (Nu-Mix)

Track #10 Sly & The Family Stone - Thank You (Falettin-Me-Be-Mice-Elf-Again) (Todds CD Mix)

Track #11 Crystal Waters - Gypsy Woman (Joey Negro's Mindmix)

The following trax come off a slew of CD comps that graced the shelves of 'big box' and mega record stores with accompanying Ad Nauseum TV adverts during the mid 90's

Club Hitz of the 90's Vol's 1, 2, 3..
Club Music's Greatest Hits (K-Tel, yup.. they were still around!)
Dance Mix USA Vol's 1,2, 3..
MTV Party To Go Vol's 1, 2..
Ultimate Dance Party 199* etc..
The Box Presents- The Big Ones of Dance Vol's 1,..

2 Unlimited - Get Ready For This / No Limit (the soundtrack to many a piece of period stock sports event footage)

Amber - This Is Your Night

Aretha Franklin - A Deeper Love

Black Box - Everybody Everybody (Great party kickoff track)

C&C Music Factory - Here We Go Let's Rock & Roll

Captain Hollywood - More & More

CeCe Peniston - Finally

Color Me Badd - All 4 Love (a kaleidoscopic melody with a great beat)

Corona - Rhythm Of The Night (This one is one of my ABSOLUTE FAVES)[:p]

Crystal Waters - 100% Pure Love

Deborah Cox - Who Do U Love

Double You / KWS - Please Don't Go
(Oddly 2 different artists doing the Same K.C. Cover!)

Enigma - Sadness (Extended Trance Mix)

Everything But The Girl - Missing (Todd Terry Club Mix) (Maango!!!)[;)]

Haddaway - What Is Love
(I'll always remember the SNL Roxbury Guys sketch featuring the Butabi Bros- Ferrel & Kattan, 'Who? Me? Him? No? Me? Him?')

Heavy D & The Boyz - Now That We Found Love (Club Ver)

Jennifer Lopez - Waiting For Tonight (her one and only noteworthy track)

Jennifer Paige - Crush

Joanne Farrell - All I Wanna Do (great Cheryl Crowe dance cover)

Livin' Joy - Dreamer

Naughty By Nature - OPP

Neneh Cherry - Buffalo Stance

No Mercy - Where Do You Go (Ocean Drive Edit)

Robin S. - Show Me Love

Ru Paul - Supermodel

Sagat - F*ck Dat! (The R rated version is VERY entertaining)

Salt N Pepa - Let's Talk About Sex

Simply Red - Something Got Me Started

Soul To Soul - Back To Life

Snap! - Rhythm Is A Dancer

US'3 - Cantaloop (Love This Funky Number!)[:p]

Taylor Dayne - Tell It To My Heart (1996 Remix)

Technotronic - Move This (featured in many a beauty product advert)

The KLF - 3AM Eternal / What Time Is Love? / Last train To Transcentral
('The White Room' is a great album BTW but sadly does not have the Late great Tammy Wynette vocal dance version of 'Justified & Ancient')

The Real Mcoy - Another Night

Urban Cookie Collective - The Key, The Secret

Venga Boys - We Like To Party (yep.. it's that 6-Flags-dancing-old-guy- with-the-bus theme)

Whigfield - Saturday Night

Whitney Houston - I'm Every Woman (Fabulous Chaka Khan cover from that once gorgeous 80's pop icon cum 00's crack whore)

Please feel free to add to this (I'm sure there's plenty more)[8D]

<blink> P.S. </blink> For those who may have just stumbled upon this discussion Check out this thread for a similar great listing of 70's & 80's Non NW Club Trax

Excellent topic 2nu! Indeed, the 90's club scene provided a much needed diversion from what Blir would call 'all that noise'. Here are some of my faves from that time:

Ultra Nate, Free
Apotheosis, Put Me In A Trance
Mariah Carey, Fantasy (Bad Boy Mix)
Gloria Gaynor, I Will Survive (Phil Kelsey Remix)
Wall Of Sound, Critical
Roy Davis Jr. Feat. Pevin Everett, Gabriel (Live Garage Edit)
Duke, So In Love (Pizzaman Radio Friendly Mix)
Taylor Dayne, Can't Get Enough Of Your Love
Jacki Graham, Ain't Nobody
Evolution, Everybody Dance
Sarah Washington, I Will Always Love You
Sybil, When I'm Good And Ready
Everything But The Girl, Missing, (Amplified Heart Album Mix)
Zhane, Hey Mr. DJ
Janet, Got Til It's Gone (Radio Edit)
Simply Red, Fairground

RIGHT ON 2nu, about Amber, Lisa Stansfield, C&C Music Factory, Crystal Waters, Black Box and Enigma. I definitely, definitely would have included those in my list had you not done so already. We got some good classic disco remakes then did'nt we? And I was so into that whole funky grand piano rhythm thing that was going on. Electronic borrowed that ingredient and integrated it very nicely into their sound which is part of the reason I love them so much. Check out:

Disappointed (Electronic Mix)
Getting Away With It
Feel Every Beat (Downstairs Mix)
Second To None
Get The Message (DNA Mix)

Alright, this is where the electro stuff belongs. I saw my thread as more of a pop one. Here goes, cheese and all. But there also must be bazillions of tracks I've long forgotten...the problem is that you hear a lot of this in clubs in a drunken (or other) stupor!

808 State - Pacific
Air - Playground Love
Bent - Magic Love
Black Riot (Todd Terry) - A Day in the Life
Chicane - Offshore
Coldcut - Autumn Leaves (People Hold On)
Crustation feat. Bronagh Slevin - Flame
Earth People - Dance
everything but the girl - Missing [ooh, I'll change mine to the same mix as your's 2Nu...Todd Terry!]
Groove Armada - At the River (English Riviera Mix)
Hooverphonic - 2wicky
Joey Beltram - Energy Flash
Leftfield - Space Shanty
LTJ Bukem - Journey Inwards
Massive Attack - Unfinished Sympathy
Olive - I'm Not In Love
Orbital - Belfast - Sasha remix
Quake feat. Maria Rae - The Day Will come
Saint Etienne - Hug My Soul
Sex-O-Sonique - I Thought It Was You
Shape Shifter - Fires of Hell
Solar House - Basement Nights
The Chemical Brothers - Star Guitar

Wow, it's so good to see those lists! I spent a lot of the 90's in clubs, and got very into the techno scene. I suppose some of these came out in the late 80's, but I think they fit here.

Rozalla - Everybody's Free
Moby - Go
Moby - next is the E
Apotheosis - O Bumbratta
Ottorongo - Fuck You
Oliver Adams - Free the World
Livin' Joy - Dreamer
La Bouche - Be My Lover
La Bouche - Sweet Dreams
Black Box - I Don't Know Anybody Else
Opus III - Fine Day
Opus III - Evolution Revolution
Corina - Baby Baby
Juliet Lewis - Stuck in the Middle
Inner City - Your Love
Eon - basket Case

I have such great memories of that song. I took a friend to the Metro in Boston one Sunday Night. He had never been in a giant stadium sized club before - so I took him up to the balcony. The Rozalla song came on & the place went nuts. The light system was right over our heads, and at the other end of the club was a huge bank of lights that strobed out F-R-E-E. It was so amazing - the lights, the strobes, a packed dance floor, the excitement of showing someone something so awesome - it was like we were tripping - I'm getting all tingley just thinking about it!

Marvy, "Wall of Sound" by Critical. Should that be The Covenant instread or there is another song and band altogether?

this is amazing!
There's a hundred songs in this thread and I hate 98 of them...the amazing part is there's actually 2 I like...[:D]

edit: ok, since I really didn't contribute much in the first part, I worked in the clubs throughout the 90s doing promotions and photography, and I thought of a couple of tracks I liked...

1. Musto and Bones - Dangerous on the Dancefloor
2. Rob Base - Joy and Pain
3. Judy Torres - um...some Judy Torres thing
4. Black Box - um...some Black Box thing
5. Ram Jam - Black Betty

there...

Wow! great lists. (I love a lot of what's on Blir's list, in particular.)

I lived overseas in '91-'94 (Peace Corps, also travelling around to teach English elsewhere) and I have vivid memories of hearing many of these songs, which were rabidly popular in Europe. Sometimes clubbing; otherwise just hearing them on the streets, in shops, etc. Some of it was cheese, but there were some truly fun, catchy tunes as well.
Most of what I enjoyed are included above; I'd add:

Inner City - Good Life (maybe this is late 80s)
Snap! - The Power & Exterminate
Culture Beat - Mr. Vain
Dr. Alban - It's My Life
Ace of base - All That She wants
Twenty 4 Seven - Slave to the Music
DJ Bobo - Keep on dancin'
2 Unlimited - Magic Friend
Captain Hollywood project - Impossible
Capella - U Got to Let the Music
Urban Cookie Collective - Feels Like Heaven
Bjork - Violently Happy
Sunscreem - Love You More
Soho - Hippy Chick
DeeLite - Groove is in the Heart & What is Love?
Happy Mondays - Step On
Madonna - Express Yourself
Jon Secada - Just Another Day

Unbelievable - I actually grew up with those guys. It was actually done by P.C.P. with Musto & Bones getting the production credit. I was going to college at the time and going out with these guys to the clubs was a great way to bolster my portfolio with photography, club passes, etc. Hanging out in the studio with them was a great way to get a real first person look at the recording, mixing, production, engineering process. And of course the guest lists and free drink passes was second to none for this club kid [:p] Do you remember their other hit, Keep It Up Dance?

Wow, I never thought I would see a thread in this forum about my second favorite musical genre, Club Dance. I've got tons of this stuff! [8D]

A few years back (1998) I decided to try my hand at the new technology of digital editing and threw together a non-stop dance mix of Eurodance for my then tweenage nieces. My 14 year-old niece declared it "phat", which I figured was a compliment. [;)]

Here was the result: Eurodance Mix 1

Warning: This is a very BIG file (over 100 Mb), so I wouldn't try to download it if you don't have a broadband connection. Another warning: this mix has a high cheese content. So you folks that are sickened by such drivel [cough] Blir [cough], should give it a miss. Bear in mind the target audience was girls aged 11 to 14. [:p]

Oh yeah Fritz, dat be a Real Phat mix![8D] Thanx!

Mrs 2Nu agrees as well, says that's the same stuff she works out to in her Friday step class.

Any chance you would have an approximated song list? (a lot of stuff sounds familiar to me but I can't specifically ID)
