Joy Division-2007

from worldinmotion.net

As mention by Peter Hook in an interview, Joy Division will have their albums re-release, remaster next year. We should expect a brand new liner note, unreleased pix, restored artwork, bonus tracks. A well thought high quality re-release package with full involvement from the management and the band. 2007 will be the year to rediscover Joy Division.

Hmmm. I'll get it of course, but since Heart & Soul contains nearly all of their official recorded works, inclusive of both studio albums and several rarities, I'm not nearly as geeked about this as I was about that. Do you know if the sound will be different/better?

I bet they are already planning a 2010 re-re-re-release. And the 35th New Order singles set is no doubt in the pipeline. Whores.

I'm with Blir on this one. My first thought was "I have the 4xCD set, why would I need these?"

Did the boxset purport to be remastered? Has remastering technology improved so much since then? Did they suddenly "find" some unreleased material?

Why do people put up with these ripoffs?

The boxset was remastered. The only advantage to invidual releases is you get the original artwork and track listing. "Remastering technology" has not improved. In fact, the engineers have gotten worse (perhaps it's really the producers). Everything is mastered extremely hot and brickwalled. just take a look at a wave graph of any track from New Order's Singles 2-disc set. No dynamic range whatsoever.

As discussed elsewhere on this forum in detail, this is due to label execs who know nothing about music FORCING mastering engineers to do this. In other words: make it hotter or we'll give the gig to someone else. 99% or more of mastering engineers HATE it when they are asked to squash the dynamic range as drastically as what we have been seeing in the past decade.

How I wish there was a backlash. [:(] It's so horrible what has happened to music on CD. SACDs are often better in regards to dynamic range given their standards. I have discovered that a lot of CDs that I discarded from the 80s are actually better than current CDs (example - Cocteau Twins)

I have to echo the same sentiments regarding a remastered version.Chances are it will not be for the better.I hope i'm wrong.

If I was to purchase this I'd want a Japanese import version. It would sound a little better. It's a shame modern day recordings are so poorly engineered with todays technology.

All i can say is thank god for external dacs.At least they lower the digital harshness in music and make most recordings more enjoyable.

I have to agree with the general sentiment here. Seems like just yesterday I coughed up my $70 for Heart and Soul (worth every penny I admit), ticking off my Joy Division collection as "complete", including the odd live releases of course. Now I gotta start over, again? This of course after buying all the vinyl back in the day - making this the third time I buy the Joy Division catalogue.

I count Joy Division and New Order as quite probably my two favorite bands, but this is too much. Martin Hannett's original production seems to me a significant and sacred part of the overall JD mythology - to tamper with it now? I don't get it, unless there is significant bonus material we've never seen. I guess there's money to be made. Prove us wrong, Hookie, and at least let us trade in our Heart and Soul boxes.

Well 24 Hours is not on the disk 1 of the soon-to-be-released Still. But
it is on the 2nd disk (a live concert) as well as the live 2nd disk of Closer. Not sure if either are the version from the Still vinyl release.[?]
