Debbie,

After quite a while without any changes, I stopped checking this board so routinely. Sorry it took me so long to respond.
It is good to hear from someone I interacted with back in the day... Still hoping to hear from people I was close to though - Like Tim Giral___.

Anyway, I would love to catch up, but I am on a shoot right now, and of course this next week will be crazy. In fact, I have a an hours work I need to tackle right this moment getting a shot list together, and then I am in dire need of S L E E P !.

The videos are still working online, but they are .wmv format, and I don't know how that works with a Mac.

You can email me at a temporary address I have here;
xpendablesite@lycos.co.uk

I hope to write back in the next week or so.

Cheers

THE MV3SITE SITE MAY NOT BE UP FOR VERY MUCH LONGER !!!!
LYCOS HAS CHANGED IT'S POLICIES, AND IF THERE IS NOT ENOUGH TRAFFIC, THEY MAY PULL IT IN THE NEXT MONTH OR SO. IF I CAN GET THE TIME, I WILL SEE IF THERE IS ANYTHING I CAN DO, BUT UNLESS SOMEONE HAS A SITE WHERE THEY CAN HOST ABOUT 150 - 200 MB, IT'S DAYS MAY BE NUMBERED.

I just registered to reply to this thread! I remember watching it in Chicago, I think it was on Channel 50 or someother before they started their own 30 min video show round 330. I remember seeing Boy George and thinking that pretty woman sounds manly. But those videos and especially that TV in the background brings back memories. Now if someone can find some NightFlight recordings.

Just surfed into this site, after a Google search of "MV3". I've often wondered over the years what happened to some of the folks involved with that show. Sometimes, it seemed like I was the only one who remembered it (as another poster here admitted)! I'm just sorry I joined this conversation a year too late!

BHS82: You are a scholar and a gentleman. You've done a great service by putting those vids up on the web! Unfortunately, I've only been able to get the "Opening Sequence" one to work, but I'll keep at it.

A few random thoughts on the subject:

* Richard Blade worked at KROQ until about 2001. He left to become a scuba diving instructor in the Virgin Islands! He decided to return to L.A. a couple of years later, but shamefully, KROQ would not have him back. He currently has a weekly show on L.A.'s "Star 98.7" (a Clear Channel station!). More importantly... my wife just bought me Sirius satellite radio as an early Xmas present. So I immediately tuned to Sirius 122 "First Wave", and who do I hear but Richard Blade! He has a DAILY show on First Wave, and it's awesome. It turns out that former KROQ DJ's Swedish Egil and Freddie Snakeskin ALSO have shows on First Wave (there may be more KROQers on Sirius, but I haven't had time to find out)!

* Richard Blade has said many times that he considers Terri Nunn to be one of his closest friends, so they obviously had an amicable parting.

* My sister (who turned me on to the show) and I also disliked Karen Scott as a host. In fact, we couldn't understand why they NEEDED three hosts, since Richard Blade was obviously the draw. Oh, and we also hated how they cut away from the videos to show the dancers! Remember, this was our only way to see music videos at the time. Now, I would give anything to see these episodes in their entirety, dancers and all. :)

* Around 1988 (I'm just guessing here), David Maples became the host of a cool little music video show on UHF channel 22 called, appropriately enough, "Video 22". This would have been a couple of years after Richard Blade started "Video One". At about this time, I really started to wonder what ever became of Karen Scott... and I still do. :P

* I, too, am blown away to find out that the show went national. All these years, I assumed that it was L.A.'s own little niche show. How cool that people in other markets got to be exposed to this type of music.

* Who was that one Mod guy on MV3 who didn't really dance, but just got down on his knees and twisted back and forth?! :P

Here is a great website that shows the KROQ "Top 106.7 Songs" of 1980-1990: http://earlhoward.com/kroq.htm

There are a couple of internet radio stations that broadcast these playlists, but I've already gone on too long here. Reply here or email me for more info.

It's been great reminiscing about my favorite era in music! Thanks everyone.

As far as getting the videos to play, just try clicking on the picture (higher bandwidth), or the "name" (lower bandwidth).

I tried to access it the other day with no success, but then had no problems today...

It finally occurred to me that the other day I was on a Mac, and today a PC... All Vids posted are wmv format which explains the errors I was getting; If on a Mac, the connect to the Windows Media Player fails, and with that failed connection, Lycos shows an error page, but on a PC, it brings up the Windows Media Player.

UNFORTUNATELY THIS SITE MAY ONLY BE UP A FEW MORE DAYS (12-20) AS LYCOS POLICIES HAVE CHANGED.

Keep checking back here, because if the site does get pulled, I want to try and find a cheap hosting site where I can post. Right now however I continue to be swamped with work - still want to chat with Debbie Diamond (mis spell), but no time right now.

Cheers

bhs82: Thanks for your reply. I was able to get the low-bandwidth files to work, but not the higher bandwidths (even though I'm on a T3 connection). Probably just as well to use the lower ones, as the site hosts might crack down if your free site exceeds its limits.

It would be a shame if they shut down the site altogether, so I hope that you are successful in your search for a new host.

I just heard Terri Nunn interviewed last week by Mick Jones on "Jonesey's Jukebox" on Indie 103.1. I think she'd be tickled to see these clips. My sister was good friends with Ric Olsen, Berlin's guitarist in those days, and she used to hang out at the band's rehearsals in Orange County. Funny how so many people who are fans of MV3 also have a connection to the show in some way.

Anyway, thanks again for this blast from the past, and cheers to you.

Well, they finally did it... Lycos started pulling my sites. Only the cover site is up, because that's where the hits register. So far, the cover site has sustained enough monthly hits to keep alive.
I am going to have to hook up with a web host and when I do, I will post the link, but I have just been way too busy to properly research it.

In the mean time, I did talk with Richard Blade 2 days ago. He was hosting the lunch hour on a local radio station playing requests, so I called in. I identified myself as one of the MV3 dancers and we had a brief chat. I was pretty tired myself coming off a night shoot at the end of 8 days straight, having been up 25 hours, driving home and exhausted (point is I was not very sharp when I spoke with Richard). I asked about how to get access to any of the videos or materials. He said he himself had very little, but that it would be very hard to do because of all the clearances that would have to be obtained - both from the bands, and or their labels, as well as the show itself. I assume that the way the show was contracted was that they had the freedom to play their own show within the context of their own show, but to go outside of their own show crosses a line. Richard said he was going to look into it, and I meant to call him back today to see if he got an answer, but missed the window while I was working. I did mention to Richard that there was quite the online following with the fondest of memories of that show. Again, I meant to give him these links, but missed the window today !@#$%^&^&*(

If any of y'all get the opportunity - give him a buzz and see if he was able to find anything out... or at least pass on links to this site and the one with the videos posted. Cheers for now.

OMG!! I thought "I" was the ONLY one who remembered this broadcast. I was just in a debate with someone the other day. I had stated that MTV stole the name (sounds similar) from MV3, who i considered to be the first TV broadcast of videos. The debate was a result of a broadcast on MTV of their first video and some of the high points of world breaking videos, over this past weekend.

I too, am very interested in obtaining some of this footage/videos.

*ok, back to reading the thread

Good News

I found a site to host and uploaded all.
There are no longer those pesky annoying ads - Yeah!

At this point, I don't have the time to try and re-test resolutions and sizes (all vidz were sized to the restrictions at the previous host site - lycos), but the site has been relocated and is better now without all the lycos bs.

You can check the link here
http://www.freewebtown.com/mv3vidz/

Enjoy
ps. Debbie, I am still interested in chatting, but just have too much going on right now. Hey - it's been 20 years, so what's another anyway...

And,, in response to the previous post; MTV did come out first. MV3 was on within a year I think. MTV had such a big splash, that producers tried to jump on the bandwagon (like reality shows of recent). VH1, MV3, etc.

Ironically, MTV was a little more conservative in that day. MV3's angle was to try and blend "American Bandstand" with "MTV" using the blue screen matting technology. Part of their niche, however, was that they were willing to play videos that MTV wasn't ; cutting edge stuff & black (Michael Jackson) artists. Today it seems just so unbelievable that MTV's roots had them playing the red-neck ZZ-Top type music, but not black artists. I am not bashing ZZ-Top by any means... artists were extending their creativity with a new set of tools and we all ate it up. Early videos did not have to make sense. It was all just different, and in the trial/exploration phase of new technology - much like the music. But it still blows my mind that MV3 got the drop on showcasing artists that MTV would later build a powerhouse on.

Oh my, the pride to remember and the shame to be old enough to!

Cheers

I grew up watching MV3, too. I love the sequences on the site, thanks, bhs82! MV3 was a lot cooler than MTV to me and my friends. We also listened to KROQ, so we knew a lot of the music, but had never seen most of the videos or seen the live performances. I liked the dancers, too, because I was just learning how to dance to new wave music and liked to learn their moves. I would love to know what happened to the other dancers, too. It would be great if someday all the episodes could be released on DVD.

Just a thought. If VH1 aired MV3 spots of Berlin, the production staff from VH1 should know how to obtain the tapes.[:p]

Wouldn't it be cool if VH1 Classics devoted an entire day to MV3? Man, this show would be so cool as a DVD box set. They've released everything else from the 80's already, why not this.

Upon watching all the 80s-centric VH1-produced shows, it made me ponder. Just how the hell do they get all that footage? Mind you, some of the older commercials were in pretty bad shape, but some of the other stuff is pristine.

Oh would I love to be able to tap into some of their 80s archives. Not just 1-2 second segments for their shows, but the whole enchilada.
