Vintage KROQ

Postby roqqer » Thu Jul 24, 2008 8:04 am

I really enjoyed those WLIR airchecks from Motnow. I recorded this tape of Kroq while vacationing in LA on July 25th, 1982. I thought it might be of interest to this forum.

Thanks roqqer!
Though I never listened to the KROQ as an East Coaster, I'm looking forward to hearing it.

Recorded 26 years ago? Sounds great!

Love the "Licorice Pizza" commercial. I used to buy records there.

I'm gonna have to dig up my old KROQ recordings and post them some time.

I grew up in Chicago where new wave music was seldom heard back in 82. When I visited LA that summer I had never heard anything like KROQ. I thought it was the greatest radio station in the world.
When I returned to Chicago it was so frustrating not having a new wave station to listen to.
It's kind of ironic that today with satellite and the internet its so much easier to hear new wave then when the music was new.

Another East Coaster here, KROQ virgin. That's Rodney B? Never heard him either. What's the song after White Wedding? About an earthquake.
I suspect it wasn't played much on WLIR[:D]

Thanks for posting; sounds great!

Rodney on the 'ROQ, or Rodney Bingenheimer... fixture of LA for a long-ass time! He would play what he wanted to, back in 1982 he was way into Modernism (Mods); hence the great Power Pop he would play, plus his oldies, and other cool '60s tunes.

He is his myspace site: http://www.myspace.com/rodneyontheroq

I remember going to his "Rodney's English Disco" to dance to great Mod/Ska/New Wave tunes... then he had to close his club down, and then I'd see him only at The Odyssey or late at Penny Feathers Coffee Shop eating.

He definately waas not the most exciting DJ to listen to, that's for sure! He played the best punk though...

Listening to the KROQ file was definately a blast into the past for me, loads of memories, the ads were the best, Licorece Pizza--bought a ton o' records there, and the concert schedule be read by Rodney, I remember seeing those bands play around LA a lot; especially, 20/20!!! Oh what fun I had, good times!

I have a large collection of kroq and 91X tapes. They are in shoe boxes somewhere in my closet. I'm guessing I have about 100 tapes. The bad part is most of them have the commercials edited out.
Only a few have been converted to MP3. I sent a few to a guy I met online a few years ago who had the equipment to convert them for me. He's a busy guy and It took him a long time to do it.
I still have my cassette deck and I have a new IMac. I can't afford to spend hundreds of dollars on a new tape deck that has a digital output. Is there an easy an inexpensive way to convert those tapes?

"Cassette or LP just $5.99" [:D]

And for as great as it is listening to those old K 'Roq files, you can re-live those glory days 24 hours a day at http://www.roqofthe80s.com courtesy of Freddy Snakeskin.

Just click on the blue "Listen Live" postie on the front page (very few commercials), check out some old videos and/or buy a vintage T-shirt in the K "Roq Shop.

Welcome to our world, East coasters! [8D]
