I can't remember which place it was. I went looking for a picture of the it online, but couldn't find anything.

There was another indie place in Pasadena also, iirc. It wasn't as good as Poo Bah's, but I remember often going to a couple different places whenever I'd head over there.

I dont think WLIR ever played that King Cotton track on the 2nd tape...but either WLIR or WDRE used an instrumental break of it during their Screamer/Shreek of the Week updates every week. Very cool to hear the whole track got play on a big station. [:)]

I've been slowly going through these off and on in the background while I work. I can't even tell you freaking cool this is. It's like a time machine that no mix tape or lunchtime flashback could reproduce. It's giving me the shivers. It's even got some tracks that I had totally forgotten how much I liked back in the day. Most prominent so far is the version of the Police's "Low Life" on the 8-15-83 tape. And the classic KROQ drop-ins...fantastic.

Same here Blir! Get total goose bumps when hearing the station IDs and old songs! Miss the old KROQ for sure!

OMG, I'm just dyin' here. the 7/26 tape with Sam Freeze is insane. He always was the king of the drop-ins. I remember he even used to introduce his show with a spliced drop-in of Ingrid Bergman saying "Sam..." and some cop show dude following it up with ..."Freeze!" That one drop-in that goes "Everything...seems perfect...to me"....jeeeezus, MASSIVE flashback! Then he follows it up with Magazine's "Shot by Both Sides"...fuck, what a stud.

There were quite a few places in Pasadena at the time.

Penny Lane - The college style indie store. Very Pasadena. I could never find anything I really like here. Don't know their fate.

Moby Disc - The second best to Poo Bah's. Great used and bargain bin sections. All their branches shut down.

Poo Bah - Where you find the hidden treasures if you have time to dig. They are still around.

Canterbury - The people there look very old but they look like they
know so much about music.

Licorice Pizza - The fashionably cool store to go to especially because they had a New Wave section.

Music Plus - These were all around too and they too had New Wave sections.

By the way, I think the place you were referring in Silverlake is Rockaway. If it was at the bottom of the hill in the middle of nowhere, that's the place.

Feaking AWESOME, Roqqer! I married a bitchin' new wave chick in 1982 (still married to her!), and my in-laws had moved to San Diego. My wife-to-be (at the time) and I made several trips to SD to stay with her parents, and I would always toon into 106.7 KROQ, lay down on the sofa and just ABSORB! God, I loved those days. Thank you so much for sharing those MP3s of those vintage tape recordings. So many memories flooding back. I've downloaded three of your shares so far, and their on my iPod touch for my listening pleasure.

This thread took a little detour into the recording shop domain, so I thought I'd share my experiences. I lived in California's central valley during my musically formative years, and I used to be over in San Francisco for shows at The Old Waldorf or Warfield Theatre practically every weekend. On those trips, I would stop in Berkeley and pick up New Romantic vinyl from Rasputin's or Leopold's. Leopold's was the bomb. Their downstairs racks ALWAYS had something new that I wanted. I also shopped at the Tower in Concord and on Columbus in The City. The only sad time out of all those years of seeing great acts and picking up killer vinyl was when we went to see OMD at The Kabuki, right after I had bought a stack o' wax, and my car got broken into during the show. All the records were gone. I forget what I had bought that day. But I'm sure I missed out on some cool stuff.

Which reminds me, roqqer...I have an MP3 of my recent "Hey Mom, I'm on 91X" show, with Steve West. I'll have to zshare that and make it available. I played just about all of my favorites on that show.
