Stay (The Second Time Around) [Solved]

What does all this mean though? I don’t know. Someone spent good money recording this track in a studio, so it is strange that we haven’t found anybody that was involved in recording it. Unless this whole thing is a hoax, we have got to find someone with knowledge of this recording somewhere…[/quote]
To paraphrase Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard:
"Alright, listen up, people. Our fugitive has been on the run for 29 years. Average foot speed over uneven ground barring injuries is 33 1/3 to 45 rpm. That gives us a radius of The Entire Planet. What I want from each and every one of you is a hard-target search of every gas station, residence, warehouse, record store, DJ booth, internet radio station, music forum, farmhouse, henhouse, outhouse and doghouse in your area. Checkpoints go up at fifteen miles. Your fugitive's name is Stay (The Second Time Around). Go get him."

One more point to note: Rainer Sauer starten on the Sounds vom Synthesizer in July 1984. Prior to that, the program was hosted by Volkmar Krammarz prior to that (beginning in January 1983). Jörg Eckrich was the director of that program, so if anyone can track down one of them.......
I just sent Volkmar an email... fingers crossed.

Been away from the forum for a few years but not surprised (sadly) to see this hasn't been solved. A real killer...

Doesn't add much but: I emailed recently with Peter Hoffman of First Affair ("Stay (Don't Hide Away"). He's a noted German producer (worked with German synth bands in the 80s and 90s) and he was not familiar with the song at all.

Wow, my gmail blew up this morning... I get emails through gmail for youtube, and there were like 250 new emails about this today, but I'm happy that more people are listening to the clip, and hopefully someone has something constructive to say that leads to an answer... I'm still reading through the comments...

When I clicked to the youtube page, there were over 98,000 views, when I refreshed the page 10 minutes later it was over 112,000 views.

One of my listeners tipped me off to the discussion here.

Naturally, I'm stumped too...

My only guess, and it's probably not a very good one, is that it's the group The World, and it's only because of some vague vocal similarities. For comparison, here's the only song I know by The World, "Shoo Shoo Wah" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ldpeWOv44Yo

Good luck - I'll lob this one out to my listeners on this week's show.

There's a lot of crap on the radio, but there's only one <a href="http://www.crapfromthepast.com">Crap From The Past</a>.

Some interesting comments being posted on youtube.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71e_R5nR7FU

-This is Stay, by a band called Delmar from Oakland in 84. They only had like 4 songs.

-I definitely know who *performed* the song... This was sung by the lead singer of a long gone German synthpop band called "Private Blue," but I do not know the name of the actual song.

-The video got the year right. This is "Second Time Around" (not 'Stay') by Euphoria Reborn. It's from their second album "After Tonight", which was issued only on vinyl in 1984. I remember that it was only on vinyl because that's what the record shop said so I had to dub a cassette of the album. This song was a top ten and the other single from the album was "My Heart / Your Heart." It's GREAT to hear this again! I'll have to call my brother and see if he still has that old cassette.

Did some poking around the net for Private Blue, and this other song by them is available to listen to on discogs:

http://www.discogs.com/artist/Private+Blue

I hear *some* resemblance to the mystery song, but still would like more confirmation. Give it a listen and see what you think.

This seems to be the closest thing out there to a 'thread of record' for this song hunt, so I figured I'd share a summary of all of the leads generated by the recent spike in activity caused by the reddit posting. All of the ongoing reddit-related activity has consolidated into this smaller, more focused and less crazy thread.

http://redd.it/1mdr5q

I'd urge everyone to visit and read the ongoing discussion there. I'm going to cross post all of the leads currently under investigation there into this thread anyway just so nothing is lost or overlooked.

---

First, I would urge everyone NOT to use the youtube video as the audio in this search. Youtube's encoding clearly degraded the quality. Use this original file instead.

http://www.dedinidevil.de/Stay_longer.ddd

You'll need to rename the .ddd to .mp3

Consensus seems to be that the audio is slowed down due to taping, you'll need to speed it up around 5%-7% to hear something closer to the original version of the track. This is simple to do with, for example, the time warp feature of the free audio editor Goldwave.

---

The first (imo best) lead is that the singer is Frank Meyer-Thurn, a late singer-songwriter-producer from Germany who was active with a lot of one hit wonder projects in the 1980s. He was the lead singer for a band called Private Blue. This information comes from youtube commenter 'Salescounter' who recognized the vocals. There is a striking resemblance and a similar style in the music.

Frank's discogs page...

http://www.discogs.com/artist/Frank+Mey ... eyer-Thurn

Here are some of his early works...

Camilla Motor: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nOqeO6ae4c4 (no male vocals, similar style) (1982)

Rewind - Oriental Eyes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7f4FFj_HDqI (1985)

Rewind - Rosalie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_SAQhHEtnwM (1985)

Del Wayne #8206;-- Mama Can't You See: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nbuOKNCvYnY (1985) backing vocals

Amati - Are You In The Mood For Bach Tonight: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBEBErstGwc (1986)

Private Blue - She's Love: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-conArUUGiI (1986)

Private Blue - Help Me Tonight: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2M9YERNYfwo (1986)

Ethno League #8206;– Radio Arabesque: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aHMO6qrYz4o (1988)

The sound most closely correlates to the Private Blue years. A lot of things line up with this lead - style, singer, location, timeline, and a producer involved in a lot of one hit wonder projects, most of which never coalesced into anything like a full EP/LP.

If this is a lost Private Blue demo, someone would need to get in touch with Westside Music to confirm.

http://www.discogs.com/label/Westside+Music

It may not be a Private Blue demo, but that doesn't rule out FMT as he was involved in a lot of projects. Camilla Hüther would be the next logical contact, as she is still alive (as far as we can tell) and was married to Frank in 1984. If it is Frank on the mystery track, this would have been recorded within the first 2-3 years after their wedding. If this was a demo for a never-realized project, she may be the only person who would know about it.

http://www.discogs.com/artist/Camilla+H%C3%BCther

This blogpost contains some additional information.

http://theisleoffailedpopstars.blogspot ... -1992.html

See also the German wikipedia page for FMT.

http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Meyer-Thurn

---

The second lead is a band called "The World" which was active in 1983 that also has a similar sound.

http://www.discogs.com/artist/World%2C+The

Two of their 1983 tracks...

Take Me To your Heart: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DsPMPrdn7KM

Shoo Shoo Wah: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ldpeWOv44Yo

Their only album 'Break The Silence' is to be found here.

http://www.woundedbird.com/world/291.htm

There appear to be no song title matches, so once again we'd be looking for a demo, cut from a never-released album, or a related project of some kind.

The people to contact would be Wayne Hammer and Jeff Slater. We've had no luck finding any contact details.

---

There are some other suggestions in that reddit thread which is ongoing. None seem particularly concrete.

Some are curious as to where this name 'Stean Lemroy' comes from, as it appears to have been posted on the original thread *long* before becoming a youtube video hoax. If the name wasn't an invention of the hoax, then where did it come from?

The leads for 'Euphoria Reborn' and 'Delmar' appear to be hoaxes as there is no corroborating information available for them anywhere online, and the details appear highly suspect.

We did manage to track down a copy of that Romance At Eleven track that was much talked about earlier in this thread, if anyone wants to hear it for themselves.

http://www.weblagu.com/Romance-at-eleve ... Ric3I.html

Happy hunting. :)

Thanks for that. The FMT stuff is interesting although the projects that he and Camilla were involved with seemed to be mostly Italo or Eurodisco. The style of Second Time Around is totally different to any of the other projects. The Italo stuff they did is certainly catchy but lacks the depth of Second Time Around. This leads me to think that it isn't connected to FMT at all.

Stean Lemroy sounds like a totally fake name. I think it was a hoax that spread and spread.

Liking the FMT lead. I've studied English dialects, and I can definitely say the Second Time Around singer has non-American speech features (I'd go as far to say German, though I haven't quantified it), which are very similar to the Private Blue singer (by contrast the singers of The World have much different vowel spaces and American, even British features -- compare 'heart' and '-ing' verbs)

If we get totally desperate, there are quantifiable tests people can do to quantify the similarity of vowels between one recording and another. But that's a lot of work -- let's hope it doesnt come to that :P
