three of my favorite albums of all time are the first u2 ones,
boy, october and war.

live at red rocks is one of the best live albums ever.

after that, they stopped making an impact or being relevant, and disappeared
and became 'invisible' which is very fitting as a title.

they already left their best days, and songs behind them
a long time ago.

As for u2......their zenith may have been back in the 80s....but they still do have their moments.....and easily outshine quite a lot of the modern day dross that dominates the charts.

Joshua Tree didn't have an impact? Songs like "Beautiful Day" and "Walk On" irrelevant?

Admittedly, it's difficult to maintain your initial momentum. While no one in the music biz goes out on top (with the exception of Johnny Cash), what U2 has done for the past 30 years is not that far removed from what they started out doing."A Man And A Woman" from 2004's "How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb" would not have sounded out of place on the "Boy" album.

If you're going to be reasonable, you must allow for the possibility that it is YOU that have changed more so than them. You listen differently than you used to 20 or 30 years ago. You allow prejudice to affect how you feel about music much more than you did when you were younger. Hard to see (and difficult to admit) this gradual process has taken it's toll. And this goes for probably the majority of people, including me. I am able to differentiate it a bit better than most, I think.

First I want to thank djcraig for even bringing this up, would've been unaware without his mention.

I've had the same love/hate relationship with U2 that many have had, and the immediacy of 'Boy' is tough for me to replicate because...well, because I was a boy when I discovered it!

But somehow they have been able to maintain a sustained relevancy that is uncommon. I'm more curious about a new song by them than I am a new song by rem, springsteen or perhaps even a radiohead.

Anyway, I downloaded the song and listened a few times now. It's unlikely to change your prejudices for or against them. It's them, practicing their craft well. Not going to alter the course of music, but I get the impression that's not their goal anymore.

Go ahead...maybe it will help a cause, and I assure you your hipster cred won't be compromised!
