Share: Kraftwerk "Sex Object" 7" & 12" mixes

In 1987, Warner Bros. in the USA was apparently considering releasing "Sex Object" as the third single from Kraftwerk's "Electric Cafe" album. A 7" and 12" version of the song was edited/mixed by Joseph Watt and both were included on the Promo-Only CD "Hit It. Dance & Contemporary Music" ( http://www.discogs.com/Various-Hit-It-D ... se/1307620 ). I bought the CD on ebay several years ago for a small fortune (the copied it and immediately sold it for another small fortune!). There's nothing especially spectacular about these mixes other than they DO each have some "new" elements to them. That, and the fact that neither mix was officially released ANYWHERE on ANY format beyond this rare Promo CD make them extremely rare. It's a great song though. I wish it HAD been released and been given a more thorough remix treatment like "The Telephone Call" had.

Am i right in saying that these are bootleg Razormaid mixes rather than something official? http://www.discogs.com/Various-Hit-It-D ... se/1307620

I understand what you're saying and I'm genuinely not sure what the correct answer is lol. I know that the Warner Bros promo CD is legit - I owned it, held it, smelled it, etc. But I can't really say with any real authority how the mixes came to be and why this is the only place they ever appeared. Joseph Watt of Razormaid is credited on the "Hit It" promo CD digipak packaging (check the photos), and there IS a German language version ("Sex Objekt") that is the same mix as the 12" mix (but with German vocals of course) that appeared on an official Razormaid CD: http://www.discogs.com/Various-The-Very ... ase/535424 Yet, it's really kind of a lackluster mix. I was all excited to get the CD about 15yrs ago, but when I listened to it, I was honestly a little disappointed lol. Maybe that's why these mixes ultimately got shelved - and knowing our beloved Ralf and Florian, they probably pulled the plug on it themselves lol. But they're still cool to have.

OK, this is kind of embarrassing - but also a good "moment of illumination" hehehe! Sitting here listening to the "Sex Object" mixes and then out of curiosity, I YouTubed the German language album version and realized that the Joseph Watt edits of "Sex Object" MIGHT simply be edits using both the English AND German album mixes! I had only ever heard the English version, so when I got the "Hit It" promo CD years ago, it sounded like there were NEW elements mixed into the edits. But after listening to the German version, it was obvious these "new" segments were actually taken from the GERMAN album version!

Embarrassing as it is to admit I somehow missed this after all these years, it was also an opportunity for me to re-create both the 7" and 12" Joseph Watt edits using better sound quality (I always hated that you can hear some tape hiss and the high end EQ is too high on the "Hit It" promo). In working on this, it became clear that the "Hit It" tracks were also sped up just a smidge.

So I dug out my USA "Electric Café" CD and downloaded the German album version in FLAC (verified as a perfect rip) and went to work. I cleaned up some of the edits that were ever-so-slightly off, increased the volume to match my re-creations of "Musique Non Stop" (posted here recently), and adjusted the EQ a tiny bit to add some low end punch. I think the end result sounds worlds better.

from discogs:
Limited edition Spanish language release on EMI-Odeon. Technopop (A2) and Sex Object (B2) are sung in Spanish, replacing the English and German lyrics heard on the more easily obtainable versions of the album. Other tracks are the same as on the regular English language release and all retain English song titles.
Gatefold cover design with picture inner sleeve and disc labels. Has not been released on CD.
