Here's something of an anomaly... a synthpop band with five singles, a major label (Virgin), a big name producer and an album released on CD that no one seems to know about! I came across Dark City's name a few weeks ago in an old Smash Hits magazine. They reviewed one of their singles and compared the band to Culture Club, citing the lead singer and producer (Steve Levine) as the culprits. I searched online but there wasn't one blog post, mp3 or youtube clip. Pretty strange considering they released 5 singles between 1985 and 1986. I tracked down a copy of their self titled CD at a bargain, and figured 'why not?' It's not bad! It's not great either. If you ever wished there was a Culture Club album between Waking Up With The House On Fire and From Luxury To Heartache, this is the band for you! The singer Amos Pizzey sounds so similar to Boy George, that if you were to tell me it was George, upon first listen I'd believe you. Don't take my word for it. I uploaded two of their singles to Youtube

Dark City - Come On Over (1986)

Dark City - Rules Of The Game (1985)

Dark City are Amos Pizzey and Richard "Cass" Lewis with John Cambridge, Victor Martin, Richie Stevens and Darren Vaz. They released one album and five singles between 1985 and 1986 on Virgin Records including the non-album singles False Alarm and Help You Out. http://www.discogs.com/artist/340903-Dark-City-2

First of all, thanks for sharing this. I dug this LP back in the day.

Secondly, it may be just my ears playing a joke on me, but I think Amos is the same singer as Captain Crucial in some early Culture Club tracks; It'd explain why an otherwise unknown band would have Steve Levine as a producer & a release from Virgin. The voice really sounds EXACTLY the same. Now, maybe if he had a unique image like George, he could've gone somewhere...
