[part 2 of 3]

'don't tell me'

mange tout
===============================================================
of note, the Canadian LP of 'happy families' had a slightly different
tracklisting, but also added a different mix of 'blind vision' on it:
https://www.discogs.com/Blancmange-Happ ... ase/709580

Blind Vision 4:23 - this version is not on this boxset.

as i mentioned before, this is my favorite album from them, very solid
all the way through, with a few tracks i didn't like, but it is by
far a great album.

all the different textures, instruments, and lyrics come together,
especially in all the singles, 'dont tell me', 'thats love that it is - game above my head',
'the day before you came', and the haunting 'blind vision'.

the album went gold, and was their most popular hitting number 8 in the UK,
4 of the 5 singles charted, with 'blind vision' getting to 10, and 'dont tell me' to 8,
which is one under 7 that 'living on the ceiling' got to. the abba cover of
'the day before you came' got to 22, and 'thats love that it is' got to 33.

there is still a question about the version of 'blind vision' that they
used here, it's most likely the single version. but they did fix the
album version of 'the day before you came'.

album
------------
Disc One
1 Don't Tell Me 3:31
2 Game Above My Head 3:58

3 Blind Vision 3:56
-----------------------------------------------------
note : appears to be single version, so not fixed on this remaster either

4 Time Became The Tide 4:49
5 That's Love, That It Is 4:22
6 Murder 5:58
7 See The Train 2:04
8 All Things Are Nice 5:00
9 My Baby 3:59

10 The Day Before You Came 5:51
-----------------------------------------------------
note : fixed, the prior release had the wrong version on it

mixes
------------

d1 11 Game Above My Head [Long Version] 7:11
-----------------------------------------------------
note : seems like its still the US remix

originally released as the b-side, and remixed on the
waves 12 inch uk single.
https://www.discogs.com/Blancmange-Waves/release/117231

it was redone for the US 12 inch EP
for 'that's love that it is', so it is in fact the US remix here.
https://www.discogs.com/Blancmange-That ... ase/446974

an amazing song, and excellent remix

d1 12 Blind Vision [Long Version] 9:40
d2 14 Blind Vision [Instrumental/Dub Version] 6:42
-----------------------------------------------------
an excellent remix of the epic track, with instrumental dub version
from the US promo 12 inch:
https://www.discogs.com/Blancmange-Blin ... ase/180863

another heavy hitting track, made superb by the remix

d1 13 Don't Tell Me [Extended] 6:23
d2 12 Don't Tell Me [Remix] 6:52
-----------------------------------------------------
note : the first version where the 1st verse is not sung, disc 2-13

ok, there's some confusion here. the disc 2-12 track is the actual uk
12 remix. however the US 12 release had 2 different 12 inch mixes.

https://www.discogs.com/Blancmange-Dont ... ase/817344

the first mix had the first verse on it, and another remix with it missing.
the other remix here is the one with the missing verse

one of my all-time favorite songs, and remixes from them,
very clever, upbeat, and dancey all in the same song,
with a catchy chorus that you can't forget. love this song.

d2 7 That's Love, That It Is [Extended] 6:35
d2 13 That's Love, That It Is [Remix] 7:31
-----------------------------------------------------
Note : Still looks like the US remix for disc2-13

there were 2 12 inch releases for this song, one with the first
remix, and the second a limited re-mix. both were great.
https://www.discogs.com/Blancmange-That ... se/1473101

however, that's the version missing here.

the first 12 inch mix is there, disc 2-7, but the second is the US remix of the track.

a super up-beat, and catchy song, thats made for dancing

d2 11 The Day Before You Came [Extended] 7:59
-----------------------------------------------------
a very downbeat song, but made brilliant covering the abba version.
lots of tablas and eastern overtones to it. very wistful lyrics.

GENERAL NOTE : as with most demos, these are basically 4 tracks or so recordings
with the bare leads, bass, drums or computer tracks on them. they are also of a
much lower sonic quality. most are instrumental unless otherwise noted.

Also, most demos are rather short, and repetitive.
================================================================================

bsides and demos
----------------
d1 14 Vishnu [Short Version] 4:46
d2 8 Vishnu [Full Length] 5:20
-----------------------------------------------------
probably some of the worst examples of trying to mix
eastern music and western. ughh for both of them.

d2 5 Heaven Knows Where Heaven Is 3:24
d2 6 On Our Way To? 5:38
-----------------------------------------------------
excellent b-side instrumentals to the blind vision 12 inch
https://www.discogs.com/Blancmange-Blin ... ase/296094

Tracks 5 & 6 music excerpt from the film 'Duet' engineered at Blackwing Studio.

'heaven knows where heaven is' is one of the most
beautiful, haunting synth instrumentals from them. just gorgeous.

'on our way to' is a nice deep, dark synth instrumental.
very menacing.

d2 9 Get Out Of That 4:27
-----------------------------------------------------
another b-side to 'dont tell me' single, ok, i was wrong
this is probably the worst vocal song they've ever done.
just terrible. maybe it was done for a joke. flat out
annoying.

d2 10 All Things Are Nice [Version] 4:11
-----------------------------------------------------
an awesome mostly instrumental song, but it does have
some vocals thrown in there, very intense. this is the
b-side of 'the day before you came' 12 inch

https://www.discogs.com/Blancmange-The- ... ase/315403

d1 15 Blind Vision [Martyn Ware Demo] 2:21
-----------------------------------------------------
a very bizarre low-fi version of the song, with very
little resemblance to the known version. the only thing
similar is the vocals. minimal keyboards and drums in it.

d2 1 How Time Became The Tide (Demo) 6:45
-----------------------------------------------------
a very different electro version, compared to the mellow dramatic album cut,
no lyrics, and very drawn out.

d2 2 If You Want To Be Hip (Demo) 3:47
-----------------------------------------------------
another interesting pseudo-instrumental, with some catchy sounds,
as a companion piece to 'all things are nice'.. better than some
of the album tracks

d2 3 It Never Rains (Demo) 3:16
-----------------------------------------------------
probably the best vocal demo from them, this should have been on
the album. very complete, and a nice midtempo song, with a
darker theme to it. excellent.

d2 4 Murder (Demo) 4:55
-----------------------------------------------------
a different take on the dark electro sound that is the album
version. not one of my favorites, but it has it moments.
the crazy vocal take makes him sound drunk, or screaming.
very haunting and demented.

maybe they are slightly slower in tempo. 'blind vision' is the
standout.

a short little intro to this concert starts it off, this show was also available
on VHS, DVD and a rare japanese laserdisc (which i ripped the audio from awhile ago).
https://www.discogs.com/Blancmange-Hell ... se/3440869

the track order is different, and it's missing 'waves', and 'i've seen the word',
although they added 'the day before you came'.

this is a great recording, and probably captures them at their peak. you can't
go wrong with the track selection, and energy that it captures. neils voice is
in great shape. a great concert to have in good quality.

individual results
============================
+ excellent album remaster, definitely their best album to me
+ excellent radio sessions, and live tracks
+ excellent remixes, and b-sides, good quality

o very good set of demos and alternate takes
o ok job on fixing some of the mistakes of earlier versions

- not a very good job of putting tracks together, on first 2 discs
- not a very good order for the tracks
- missing some major remixes and tracks (although there wasn't room for them)

=======================================================
overall, if you're a fan of this album - get this set
if you're a collector - you'll want this album also.

the remaster quality is very good, if you're concered about sound quality.

if you're a casual fan - you'll enjoy this album also, since it has such
a cohesive and complete feel to it. the mixes are also a great addition.

no downsides on this package, except for the several missing remixes. they
should have compiled them better to fit.

[part 3 of 3]

'lose your love'

onto what i consider the last good blancmange album..
sure, they've done more in the past few years than their 80's output,
but it comes nowhere near the quality of their past..

'believe you me' scraped into the lower 50s of the UK charts when it
came out, and produced 3 singles, 'whats your problem' at 22,
'lose your love' at 77, and 'i can see it' at 71, which is the last
time they would see any kind of chart action.

the singles are all great, high quality, excellent artwork, and
epic in proportion to the anemic album versions... its good that
they are well represented here.. in multiple versions sometimes.

of note is 'side two', which is the actual '22339' extended,
and was a bside of the 'whats your problem' single..

'lose your love' is my favorite song from them of all time, and
having both mixes, one of which i had on a misprinted american
release is kind of rare:
https://www.discogs.com/Blancmange-West ... se/8165917

this is on the split 12 inch with west india company, also the shortened
mix was only on the canadian promo 12 inch:
https://www.discogs.com/Blancmange-Lose ... se/1002566

also included is the web version of 'lose your love (unreleased mix)', which
was on their site as a streaming version called 'lose your love westminster bridge 2010)',
[along with another mix that is not on the boxset 'dont tell me (2010)' a much slower
acoustic mix, which actually works]...
the new one is 'lose your love with helen' which is a demo.

onto the albums and tracks.

believe you me
===============================================================
album
------------
Disc One

1 Lose Your Love 4:08
-----------------------------------------------------
Note : still not sure if fixed

On the remaster, they used a track that was not the album version,
it was similar to the single mix. Still trying to verify if they
fixed it.

2 What's Your Problem? 4:12
3 Paradise Is 3:51
4 Why Don't They Leave Things Alone? 4:37

5 22339 5:20
-----------------------------------------------------
Note : fixed version

The prior remaster had the wrong version, and this is the correct
album version

6 Don't You Love It All 4:36
7 Believe 3:49
8 Lorraine's My Nurse 2:33
9 Other Animals 4:34
10 No Wonder They Never Made It Back! 4:35
11 John 4:26

mixes
------------

d1 12 Lose Your Love [7" Single Version] 4:05
d1 14 Lose Your Love (This Club Mix) 6:47
d2 8 Lose Your Love [Extended] 10:20
-----------------------------------------------------
what i consider their ultimate single, and best song
to date. sure it's a short chorus, but the build up
and beat are amazing, especially in the full version.

if you can't take that, there is always the shorter remix,
while the shortest edit, gives you a taste of the song.

beautiful lyrics, heavenly synths, eastern beats, and guitars all add up to
a masterpiece.

d1 13 I Can See It [Extended] 7:56
d2 13 I Can See It [7" Single Version] 4:07
-----------------------------------------------------
how this song evolved from the ballad of 'why can't they leave things alone',
is a testament to how amazing this mix is.

it is transformed into a masterpiece of sounds, guitars, drums,
and super catchy chorus.

unfortunately the equally interesting dub mix from the promo is not here:
I Can See It (Bonus Beats) around 9 minutes long.
https://www.discogs.com/Blancmange-I-Ca ... se/1859440

15 Mixing On The Ceiling [Megamix] 10:37
-----------------------------------------------------
Note : fixed version, full

on the previous remaster:
https://www.discogs.com/Blancmange-Beli ... se/1451463
a track called 'mixing on the ceiling (edit)' was supposed to be there,
it wasn't, it was some techno remix of 'living on the ceiling',

well here, they actually put the real track on here, it was the
bside of the uk 12 inch of 'lose your love'.

unfortunately it's not very good, and only has a few songs,
that are barely mixed.

d2 1 Side Two 7:34
-----------------------------------------------------
this track is actually '22339', and is the b-side of
the 'whats your problem', a great remix, nice extension
of the album track.

what's missing is the german 7 inch edit of it.
https://www.discogs.com/Blancmange-What ... se/1234518

d2 9 What's Your Problem? [Extended] 7:01
-----------------------------------------------------
another great remix, extended and with a new chorus,
back up vocals and lots of other surprises. a great sounding
track made even better

GENERAL NOTE : as with most demos, these are basically 4 tracks or so recordings
with the bare leads, bass, drums or computer tracks on them. they are also of a
much lower sonic quality. most are instrumental unless otherwise noted.

Also, most demos are rather short, and repetitive.
================================================================================

bsides and demos
----------------

d2 4 Scream Down The House 4:10
-----------------------------------------------------
one of the better bsides, barely that was on the 'i can see it'
single. yes, the hokey lyrics, bizarre rhyming are typical blancmange,
but thats what saves it, the campiness of it is actually funny.
it's a lighter version of '22339'

d2 2 A Remedial Course (Demo) 7:05
-----------------------------------------------------
a very long, experimental, almost ambient track,
interesting, but just ok.

d2 3 Believe (Demo) 3:45
-----------------------------------------------------
a super slow version of the song, the vocals are
intact, but the instrumentation gives it a totally
different mellower feel, compared to the intensity
of the album one.

d2 5 Gentle On My Mind (Demo) 4:33
-----------------------------------------------------
a very barebones basic cover of the glen campell song,
(who just recently passed away), very touching.

d2 6 M Driver (Alternate Dream) (Demo) 4:09
-----------------------------------------------------
a very hyper, kinetic song, with lots of beats, blurts,
beeps and other frantic songs, along with some vocal
sounds thrown in.. not quite a complete song.

d2 7 River Of Life (Demo) 3:15
-----------------------------------------------------
a very slow, moody vocal song, better than some of
the songs on the album, very well done.

d2 10 Don't You Love It All (Demo) 3:16
-----------------------------------------------------
probably one of the best demos out of all of them,
of an existing track. i love the original, and although
simplified here. it still retains most of the vocal
feel to it. sure it's got less tracks, and reverb,
but the chorus and vocalizing is great, along with
the clever lyrics. excellent.

d2 11 Lose Your Love With Helen (Demo) 2:50
d2 14 Lose Your Love In London [Unreleased] 3:48
-----------------------------------------------------
both of these versions slow down the song, and give
a different flavor to the tracks. the first one is
rather odd as a duet, and the second one is actually
pretty good, and incorporates some new key changes
to the vocals, as opposed to the monotone vocals of the original

d2 12 Reaching Out (Demo) 5:06
-----------------------------------------------------
a semi serious song. midtempo beats, and minimal synths.
with some polish this could be a really great song.
its just not quite there yet. but its still better
than some of the songs that were on the album.

choice, and a worthy inclusion.

individual results
============================
+ excellent album remaster, a good album
+ excellent radio sessions, and live tracks
+ excellent remixes, and b-sides, good quality

o good set of demos and alternate takes
o ok job on fixing some of the mistakes of earlier versions

- not a very good job of putting tracks together, on first 2 discs
- not a very good order for the tracks
- missing some major remixes and tracks (although there wasn't room for them)

==============================================================================================

and combining the results of all 3 sets,
this is the final impression

overall final thoughts
==============================
+ great representation of each main album
+ good quality remasters

o good selection of main mixes
o good selection of live tracks

- ok quality on demos
- ok selection of demos
- missing major mixes, and key edits and tracks

overall, its quite the mixed bag on tracks, tracklistings, order
and selection..

i feel it could have at least been presented better, and more
care taken to ensure the proper edits and mixes were present...

the quality of the demos can't be helped, but some of the poorer
ones could have easily been replaced with other tracks. most
of the demos don't really show much promise or development.

its unfortunate that to me, as a huge fan of the band,
knowing that this will probably the last time these sets
get released, that they didn't really do that great a job on them.

to me it's only an acceptable package, especially considering the cost of it.

-------------------
hardcore collector or fan - get it anyways

average collector of boxsets and 80s music - wait for a sale, or get it used

casual fan - avoid, and just get the last remasters or used copies of the original..

Wow, I've had "Lose Your Love" UK12" and the CA promo 12" that you've listed above for almost thirty years, and I don't think I ever noticed a difference in the mixes. Guess that says how much I listened to those two records.

Hi everyone! Is that 'glitch' in "That's Love, That It Is (Extended)" at the 01:18 mark also present on the original 12" vinyl? It can also be found on the previous double-cd edition. Is it a 'mix thing' or related to (previous?)mastering? Anyone?

Why is the excellent b-side Running Thin missing from this box? That should have been the first complaint.

I'm not sure if this very thing has been discussed here, as this blog space starts to look like an entire book, but
I noticed the 2008 & 2017 CD version of the BELIEVE YOU ME album has a couple of tracks with a
different actual duration than that given for the original German vinyl LP
https://www.discogs.com/Blancmange-Believe-You-Me/release/1398743

These tracks are:
Other Animals 4.32 [vinyl duration is given as 4:17]
No Wonder They Never Made It Back! 4.33 [vinyl duration 3:30]

Are the durations on that LP (the UK LP did not have any durations) wrong, or was the vinyl actually
a bit shorter?

Cheers/JW
PS I hope I got everything right now with these three deluxe sets in my discography

This is getting a release with less tracks as a 6xLP boxset.

Each set features six back vinyl records (two per album) in gatefold sleeves with printed inners. The three vinyl packages then slot into an outer slipcase. The audio is remastered and these come with a download card.

The Blanc Tapes vinyl box will be released on 24 May 2019. The official Blancmange store offers this set with a 12″ x 12″ ‘Blind Vision’ print SIGNED by Stephen and Neil.
