Heaven 17 Another Big Idea 1996-2015 9 CD Box Set

Heaven 17 Another Big Idea 1996-2015 9 CD Box Set

Postby BigManRestless » Fri Jan 10, 2020 2:00 am

From Edsel (oh dear...how many faults this time?) a follow up to the Virgin Years box set. Not sure how many takers there will be for this, especially at £80. Bigger Than America is a very good album, Before After is decent, Retox/Detox is diabolical and the live album and Naked...are pretty inessential, and that live one is available is so many configurations already.

PR blurb:

This deluxe 9 CD set contains three studio albums (Bigger Than America, Before After, Naked as Advertised), a previously unreleased album (Space Age Space Music), The remix albums Retox/Detox, the concert album How Live Is, plus 48 bonus tracks (remixes, tribute tracks, non-album singles) and an illustrated 28 page 12x12 book with credits and annotation based on brand new interviews with the band. In 1988, after their fifth album for the Virgin label, Martyn Ware, Ian Craig Marsh and Glenn Gregory decided to rest Heaven 17. In 1996, after various British Electric Foundation and individual projects, the ensemble re-grouped to record the first album in this set, "Bigger Than America". The album featured two singles "Designing Heaven" And "We Blame Love", both of which would see many remixes released, and 1998's 2CD release "Retox/Detox" Featured nothing but remixes. In 1998, Heaven 17 decided to play live for the first time, and a concert was recorded and released in 1999 as "How Live Is". Around this time the band also recorded cover versions of songs by Madonna, U2 and Prince for cleopatra Records tribute albums. A brand new studio album, "Before After", the last to feature Ian Craig Marsh, was released in 2005 and (aside from a cover version of "Don't Fear The Reaper") featured the singles "I'm Gonna Make You Fall In Love With Me" And "Hands Up To Heaven", both of which attracted many remixes. In 2008 "Naked As Advertised - Versions 08" Featured new interpretations of Heaven 17 and Human League classics alongside a cover version of "Party Fears Two". This fully-annotated set ends with the previously unreleased instrumental album "Space Age Space Music". Recorded in 1998, the idea was to issue the album, and invite singers to record their own melody lines and lyrics. The concept was never realised….

Out March 20th 2020.

Yeah I'd prefer a deluxe edition of Bigger Than America, and perhaps one of Before After that might incorporate Naked As Advertised. I think there's a lot of underrated stuff here, but a lot of nonessential stuff, particularly the remixes.

I’ll definitely avoid the boxset but will get BIgger Than America and Before After if they’re reissued separately.

That Retox/Detox is utter crap as there wasn't one decent remix on it. As far as i'm concerned they haven't released anything decent since Bigger Than America and i bought the first box but i won't be going anywhere near this.

Same here.

By the way, it's difficult for me to understand why Edsel went for another boxset, or was it a decision from Glenn and Martin, or both ?! Did the Play To Win boxset sell THAT much ?!

I would sadly say arrogance that you could do it once, so why not twice. It'll sell it to the hardcore but at that price, i doubt anyone else.

The Adrian Sherwood 'Let's All Make A Bomb' remix is pretty good, but otherwise yes, it's a horrible remix album that stood out even in a time when there were a lot of horrible remix albums.

This later period material is obviously of less substance and less interest outside of the core fan base, but the band will probably make more money from this set than they did on the first, given the percentage Virgin no doubt got/gets. This second box was their own idea, I think. There's now a full track list and images for the CD and vinyl formats on Amazon;

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B083Y3LBKK

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Another-Big-Id ... B083Y3NJSD

Could they do a third set, covering the B.E.F. material? I know the 3CD set that was previously released was really lovely but oddly incomplete.

OK, let's play the "what's missing" game, here's what I've got so far:

Hand Up To Heaven Qubiq Long Mix
I'm Gonna Make You Fall In Love With Me Qubiq Dub

This Is Not My World
Fascist Groove Thang (Duckbeats_So_Yo_Dub)
Fascist Groove Thang (Barry Gilbey & Supadubz Remix)
Fascist Groove Thang (Tommy Vicari Jnr Remix)
Fascist Groove Thang (Ape Generals Remix)

Fascist Groove Thang (Coin Operated Boy)
Fascist Groove Thang (Paul Sleaze)
Fascist Groove Thang (Joe Moskow & Ralph Razor)
Only After Dark

Also, Discogs says that Fascist Groove Thang (Tinman Vocal Mix) is 7:04 on Retox / Detox and 8:14 on the Temptation single. Is one of those times incorrect, or are there two versions?

True, but Gimme Shelter had other artists,
so would not count, and would be too hard to get the rights too.

This has been out a while now. While obviously not as eagerly anticipated as the Virgin Years box, apparently it still sold well. But I'm kind of surprised at the lack of online discussion about it. I don't mean just here, I mean anywhere.

I bought it because I am a completist dork. I know many of you understandably gave this a pass, but those of you who picked it up, are you satisfied? I'm not familiar enough with the material to know for sure, but did Edsel get it right this time? No egregious errors?

One of the biggest draws for me was the unreleased album. It's OK, but it's an album of grooves, textures, and ideas, rather than fully formed instrumental songs per se. Presumably had the tracks been combined with guest vocals as originally planned, they would have undergone more shaping and structuring. But as they stand now, despite some really neat and exciting moments, it gets kind of tedious.

Negative1, you posted that you contributed to this release and you are acknowledged in the booklet. What was your contribution, and how did it come about?

With the omissions from the last box set and this one, Edsel could probably compile another 3-4 cd mini box set of leftovers...

I have heard it. I really like the outtakes.

It does a great job of combining all their latter works, and mixes into a great package.

That should do it for most people.

I'm just glad to have a mention in the credits.
Nice to have a small mention and credit for supplying tracks from a fan.

They were missing some promo mixes from this single, so I ripped them,
and sent them to one of the persons working on the tracklistings.

They didn't have the first remix edit track.
