Green Gartside solo single out today

Green Gartside solo single out today

Postby postpunkmonk » Fri Jun 19, 2020 5:32 am

Green Gartside of Scritti Politti has released a new solo single today. ‘Tangled Man’ b/w ‘Wishing Well’ are covers of songs by folk artist Anne Briggs that he'd performed solo to work out new arrangements of for a project that his friend and bandmate Rhodri Marsden had been asked to make. Masdren knew that Green was a fan and asked if he'd be interested. He was and now we have the first Green music in 14 years. Has it been that long since the excellent "White Bread, Black Beer?"

I thought there was a Scritti reissue campaign underway last year?! What about that? Any news?

Isn't Green one of those people that seems to return out of nowhere when no one is expecting it?

Pretty much, yeah. I thought his last Scritti album was spectacular songwriting and playing. Since these are cover versions, I'm guessing that's why it's under his own name. His only covers had been as guest vocalist with British Electric Foundation in the past. I think the Scritti name is reserved for originals.

As Scritti Politti he covered the Beatles' "She's A Woman" (with Shabba Ranks).

I ordered the 7" on Friday and it's already out of stock! Good thing I didn't dawdle. The songs are on Soundcloud:

These sound fantastic to my ears. A delightful blend of folk and funk. Green is in a groove that I want to hear more of. Hopefully not another 14 years.
