Version? What Version?

Call me daft, but one thing I never quite understood on vinyl 12" singes, EP's, etc. is when a song is listed with just plain "(Version)" appended to it. What exactly is this supposed to imply, other than that it's a different version from the original? I'm always thinking: what version? 12" Version ... Francois Kevorkian version ... Amazon version ... We're-too-lazy-to-give-this-a-name version? [:p]

I know what you mean...maybe I'm daft, but I THINK that term originates with Jamaican reggae, and they would refer to 'version' for the Dub version of a song. Maybe just a slang/dialectical term that caught on?? It makes sense that punks/new wavers would

Hey, in fact, didn't Musical Youth, in "Pass the Dutchie", say "This Generation - - rules the nation - - with VERSION"

It is primarily Reggae based, mostly a DJ tool to extend a song from turntable to turntable. Scritti Polliti were the main culprits of labling songs as such.
