Achieving a milestone

For those who are following me for quite some time, I am around here since 20 August 2004 (how time has flown by), they know the story behind this series which I started in 2005. At first the tracks presented on the first sixty (number 61 was then called the bonus volume) were downloaded from various blog sites and NWOutpost in presented and a variety of MP3 formats.

In the autumn of 2015, ten years after date, I picked up the project trying to find all featured tracks in a 320Kbps MP3 rip. It took me several months but in the end was able to get the job done and presented them on my blog. I still remember the discussions about the title for the series being okay, since a lot of the presented tracks were quite popular in other countries.

The funny thing is that each time I was triggered to return to those 80s music styles, it was after I decided to quit, or taking a break from, writing for the Dutch progressive rock magazine iO Pages. In the summer of 2018 the magazine celebrated its 150th issue. For me time to call it a day.

So as expected I turned back to the 80s favorite music styles like new wave, post punk, synthpop, gothic and more. Over the last months of 2018 I collected a lot of new unknown songs to me and created seven new volumes. In 2019 I created another twenty which were still presented on the blog. Also in addition, the focus had really shifted now to unknown music from the eighties. Since then the Volumes followed with fifty in 2020, sixty four in 2021 and presenting you the forty sixth Volume of 2022. Meanwhile I had changed from the blog to NWOutpost to present each Volume.

Which brings us to volume 250 for which we have to go back to 1983. I was in the fourth year of the “HAVO” (higher general secondary education) and with some friends I had discovered the “phonotheek” (vinyl library) of Haarlem. Every three weeks we cycled together to the library to borrow new records. One of these albums that made a huge impression on me, together with Toyah’s Warrior Rock, was Oil On Canvas by Japan. I was completely blown away by their style and the great basslines of Mick Karn.

Over the years I kept following the former Japan members. During the nineties I reviewed all the Medium releases for iO Pages and from 2000 on until 2018 I kept reviewing their solo and group releases as well. Spicy detail the last reviews I wrote were about Richard Barbieri's Variant 5 and Book Of Romance And Dust by Exit North; the new band of Steve Jansen. During this period I did several interviews with Richard Barbieri, Steve Jansen and Mick Karn.

So when it became clear that I wanted to create a milestone Volume, remember it was early 2021 when the idea popped up and I was getting close to volume 200, it had to do something with Japan, but this Volume got out of hand completely. To cut a long story short this is basically why I moved it forward for so long. It turned out the collaborations with Japanese artists were not that huge during the eighties compared to the nineties onward, but the former Japan members turned up as guest, producer, (co)writer, engineer etc. on a lot of releases between 1980-1990.

In the end it turned out to be at least five discs. And since I could not choose which tracks to drop, I added a sixth BONUS disc to the set, which offers you two interesting collaborations with Midge Ure, some non-album tracks of various Japan releated bands (Raintree Crow and JBK) and a great and long ambient piece of David Sylvian as the outro of this milestone volume.

Ris, Let me be the first to congratulate you on this milestone of 250 Volumes (crazy) and what a band/artists to honor this accomplishment! I know first hand the work that goes into putting these series together and what it takes to keep your virtual audience interested and curious at the same time. Your attention to detail, research and compiling is second to none and not to forget the wonderful write ups and stories behind your feature bands/artists and themes! So, from me a huge virtual applause and job very well done!

Congrats on the milestone! I'm relatively new to this group and wasn't aware of your background (though I certainly vibe with your musical interests) so I appreciate - as I'm sure we all do - sharing that with us as well as this gigantic collection.

Thanks again for everything, Rissan!
