here's a not so great review of Thursday's concert from the NY Times:

Not perhaps written from the perspective of a mega-fan (like those of us here), but also not entirely out of line. He does speak to Yaz's influence in everything from elctro to r&b to house to freestyle. I'd be willing to bet than in order, the most sampled artists are:

-James Brown
-Public Enemy
-Yaz (specifically the laugh from Situation)
-Michael Jackson

The thing he got wrong was that it was ppl chatting during Midnight that stopped the song - it was our belting along with the song that threw her off!

Otherwise, I agree that Vince's vocoder sounded silly for the most part. But Vince is silly - and it gave him something to do. [;)]

Bring on tonight!

Jeez, what a typically smug, hipper-than-thou NYC review. Cunt.

A better one from a Boston Herald reviewer:

Beacon where they should have done all 3 shows in NYC. Sound and acoustics and environment so much more fitting Yaz. Brilliant!!!

Martin Gore (Depeche) was sitting in front of me!! Totally distracted me (ha), but amazing to see him enjoying Yaz!!

Alison requested that we listen to Winter Kills because she heard some people don't like their slow songs (perhaps a reference to the cunty review in the Times?), but clearly that was not right! The crowd was pin-drop silent and massive applause after WK!

Security was the douchiest I've seen in ages. Constantly forcing people out of the aisles. (Fire hazard, shmire hazard.) But it only took mildly away.

Brilliant!

Saw shwenko again. I think he was waiting at the stage door to try to meet the band. Hope he was successful! Few other nwo'ers there too, but didn't meet up.

What a fucking night. Martin fucking sitting in front of me! Not sure which was better - that or Yaz?!?!

another great show! My final of 3 shows (hey, sorry I'm no Ebbhead[:D])

What song did Alf flub tonight? I was in the nosebleed section, so I have an excuse! But really, does she do this at every show?

No laugh in Situation[:(]

Too Pieces- TOO PRECIOUS[:)]

Great meeting up with Marvymarv, Marie3 (finally) and ReillyGirl at the stage door after the show- we were told though that Yaz had split very quickly.

As a consolation though, who strolls out? Mr Martin Gore[8D] A small cloud of fans formed around him as he strolled down 75th Street.`

Too bad that my cellphone battery kept dying on me, compromised meeting up with EH.

Anyone going to DC, Dallas or Costa Mesa?

I'm debating going to Costa Mesa, it's part of the Orange County Fair, so the admission to the show, with The Psy. Furs opening up, is included in the $20 admission, what a deal! [:D]

Plagerism, you going to Dallas???

5. [:)] Glad it's not a longer tour. Halfway considering the Costa Mesa show, but there's no way I could pull that off.

Yeah, as a DM fanatic, it was pretty amazing.

I have a terribly blurry Blackberry photo of Mr. Gore, but my friend has a good couple of shots on her camera. Hope she can get her internet working at home - she's been offline for a few days.

That's cool Martin made an appearance out of the door. Though it sucks that the band left before him.

IIRC, she flubbed Anyone. Didn't seem it was flubbed to me, but whatever.

Yeah, what was up with the no laugh during Situation again? They did them in LA, but only Thursday in NY? Hope it wasn't a reflection of her mood in NY.

Too Pieces still my favorite. But I also like those rumble strips in the shoulders of higways for the same effect on my crotch. [;)] The bass is so killer in Too Pieces!!

Other faves - Sweet Thing - a party romp! Who knew? Always thought it was a bit of a throwaway song. And Bring Your Love Down with the call and response at the end from Alison?! So friggin cool.

There were some freaks and fanatics near me, man! People going insane!

Another DMode connection...wifey and I were driving on the picturesque Henry Hudson Pkwy out of the City on Saturday morning with a new wave mix on the pod. "Dreaming of Me" comes on, and we both look at eachother like "Wow, that is so Yaz!" I really loved the early Clarke DMode. I think I associate that DMode era so much with my awakening to new wave that the latter stuff doesn't nearly resonate as much with me. I'm off to listen to "New Life", etc. [8D]

PS. Clip of the crazy young lads...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4CSVoqq1NQA

...is that Vince's same reel-to-reel in the background?! [:p]

Ebbhead, that is just too fucking awesome that you were right behind Martin. I seriously thought of coming up for the show but just couldn't. I wish they had scheduled a date in Philly but oh well. Again, it was great to meet up with everyone at Thursday's show. We have to do it again. Maybe in Oct at the Echo and the Bunnymen show.
