OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am still in cloud nine a day after the show. I cannot believe how great it was. The Beacon Theatre is so beautiful and to see Yaz there was just fantastic. (As you can tell I am happy!)[:D]
Alison's voice is unreal. Just beautiful. I thought she looked so pretty. I was disappointed that they didn't do "The Other Side Of Love", but I can live with that.

I was with the best of company at the show. (thanks you two) Even though I was a "Miss Daisy" in the car, [;)] I had a GREAT time.

Funny, I was in some great company myself! Alison's voice is utterly magnificent. The wonderful thing about her is how she just draws you in with that lovely smile. So sweet. I loved when danced so unabashedly during the instrumental bits of the songs too. Pop divas out there take note: you [i]can[/i] be of epic musical stature [i]and[/i] be humble. Her disarming introduction to Winter Kills: "...this is a little piano song which I would be so grateful if you listened to 'cuz I LOVE IT!" Adorable.

They played everything off of Upstairs at Eric's and You And Me Both except for And On and Softly Over. Seeing them on an eleven date tour of the U.S. definitely makes me feel lucky especially considering they hadn't played live in over twenty-five years. Unforgettable show, beginning to end.

Glenn Gamboa...you rock! He really nails a lot of Yaz's essence while critics of both Yaz and some of these reunion-type gigs often totally miss it. I hear mocking sometimes that these bands are being falsely marketed as "great bands" from the past when in reality many of them may not ever have been "great", may have just been new wave flashes in the pan, and may just be appealing to middle-aged nostalgia. No question there's some of the latter out there (P-Furs and Berlin IMHO, as fun as some of their songs might be).

I think Yaz are very different. Yes, they only had a brief tenure with two albums, neither of which may formally have been in the pantheon of all-time greats in terms of technical ground-breaking or record-sales (Upstairs finally hit platinum after 7 years in 1989). But there's an undeniably unique and iconic quality to the warmth of Alison's vocals married to the austere but melodic keyboards from Vince. That word "Icon" and Yaz are inescapable and set them apart from other popular but frankly throw-away new wave.

I knew Glenn would review it. He's a good dude and gets it. You have to be a little dubious of reviewers who are clearly megafans going into it, but this captured it more accurately than the Times review. Then again, I'm a megafan, so this plays into my take on the show as well. [:p]

Supposedly both Wed and Thurs were sold out, but Thurs felt more packed to me. Hadn't realized Sat sold out, but perhaps the good word of mouth pushed them over the edge later in the week.

Re: merch - Their official site is yazooinfo.com. Not sure if they have e-comm there. (On the train or I'd check for ya.) If not, there's always ebay as a last resort. Or try the MuteBank at mute.com (or mute.co.uk?), though you'd have to pay shipping fees from the UK.

Or rely on the kindness of friends/strangers. Perhaps glokstadt is going to Costa Mesa (I think he was considering it) and can pick one up for you this week??

Also, schwenko, as the only other person I know who went to both LA and NY, would you say there was a noticeable difference to the audiences? In LA, I definitely felt the aging KROQqers, where in NY, I didn't really feel the WLIR effect as much as it was dance music fans - at least at Terminal 5. I'd be curious to hear your thoughts. Sad that with WLIR's sporadic history in the past 10 years (or more) they weren't a big reason the shows sold out - in my opinion.

Side note: apparently "on line" is a purely Northeast thing, and the rest of the country says "in line". The Northeast rules! On line should be right.[;)]

Seeing the SOLD OUT sign at the Beacon was great. It made the beginning of the night all the more special.

The Newsday.com photos of the concert are good. I really liked numbers 2,4,5 and 7.

Besides the quote Marv referenced, I especially liked this one from the article: "Moyet's deep, soulful voice has only grown richer over the years, proving immediately with "Nobody's Diary" and later with the whisper-to-a-scream range of "Midnight" how she remains an underrated musical force". It nice to read that other people feel Alison is totally underrated in the music business.

I think Glenn Gamboa did a great job reviewing the concert.
