As their 25th anniversary approaches, Australian art-rock band The Church will be making a special stop at the Grove of Anaheim on Friday July 21. Best known for the shimmering "Under the Milky Way," a Top 40 hit, The Church combines the jangling guitar pop of '60s icons like the Byrds with the opaque wordplay of frontman Steve Kilbey to create a lush, melancholy brand of neo-psychedelia rich in texture and melody.

The Church have remained one of the world's most innovative and enigmatic groups justifying praises from the press including "Best guitar band on earth," "Sonic perfection," and "Sounds that caress the senses."

gonna catch them here in New Orleans on the 29th, Rob Dickinson lead singer from Cathering Wheel is opening up! Sweet!

I'm going to this one ... looking forward to it! Rob Dickinson opening makes it even sweeter.

The show was great, 3 encores! I'm sure they were a bit dissapointed at the lonely crowd of maybe 100 ppl at HOB New Orleans. On the ticket it says "an intimate evening with The Church", thats exactly what it was, very cool. The played alot of oldies including a really slow version of Hotel Womb. They also played Mhyrr and Tristese off Hey Day which was awesome. There new album "Unwanted like the Clouds" is pretty good, pick it up if you get a chance.

Rob Dickinson was great also playing a couple old Catherine Wheel tracks: Chrome and Crank acoustically! He signed autographs and took pix with fans, cool guy. He played a couple of songs with the Church.

I had read that the shows would be all acoustic, due to hearing loss of one or more of The Church band members. Was this the case?

I hadn't heard about the hearing loss. Rob Dickinson was all acoustic. The Church played with full instruments, amps, drummer...the works. It wasn't played at full power for sure but I didn't think it was lower enough for it to stick out in my mind as something different.

Saw them last night at the State Theater in Falls Church, Virginia. Great show. Rob Dickinson played "Heal", "Crank", and "Black Metallic" from the CW days and six new pieces. Quite nice. A live CD was available for sale along with his new release. He spent the intermission signing CDs and talking to fans afterwards. Nice guy. The Church were very tight, lots of acoustic guitar and keyboard, taking creative liberties with several of their classics, including "Metropolis" (a flamenco version!), "Don't Look Back", "Tristesse", "Two Places at Once", "A New Season", and "Buffalo". Really enjoyable. A new release, Tin Mine, compiling many song from the more recent albums and two new tracks (one of which, "All I Know", was played at the show) was available for sale, supposedly available only at the concerts. Sadly, we had to leave before the show was over to meet the babysitter. I'd have loved to catch the encores. Seventh time I've seen them since 1984. Still well worth seeing again.
