Ollie!!! Why didn't you post this earlier?? I'm just back from the show, and Nikki rocked!!! I could easily had said something to her or the guitarists!!

And for the next to last song in the set, Josie Cotton came on stage to sing "Johnny Are You Queer?"!!

Nikki was certainly an eye-opener. Goddamn they were fun. I mean, goddamn! I thought Josie looked great for how old she must be - jeez, she was in Easy Rider wasn't she? And what a crazy freakin scene it was. I could not believe how many 20-somethings were there with their dyed hair, piercings, red and black horizontal striped shirts, mini-polkadot skirts, black jeans, checkered Vans and lots and lots of leather. It was the freakin 80's! Plus a bunch of Japanese and Norwegian kids - over for this festival?? I don't know. Bizarre really but fantastically fun.

This crowd was nuts for the music too. I couldn't believe how many kids sang along to all the big 20/20 songs - just screaming out the words to Nuclear Boy, Cheri, Remember the Lightning and Yellow Pills. It wasn't an older crowd at all. I guessed the Nuclear Boy opener - awesome! Also guessed the Pills encore but not the totally rocking finale of the Flaming Groovies Shake Some Action. I had a hardcore flashback when they made a classic SoCal shoutout - "We used to really rock the joint with this one at Madam Wongs!" Wow...cooooool!

A great great time. Afterwards, I was telling Schwenko how it had been 28 years since I last saw 20/20 - they played my high school my freshman year, LOL! Holy shit, then I realized that they had to have been the very first new wave band I ever saw...I think. Whatever. What a total trip to see them all these years later...in Brooklyn of all places!

[Oh wait, crap, that was Toni Basil in Easy Rider not Josie Cotton...you mean they aren't the same person?!]

I only saw the thread after it was too late. I've met Nikki a bunch of times and she is swell. They're going to Europe in April. I'm actually making some pins for them before they leave.

Night 2 3/30/07 Southpaw Park Slope, Brooklyn, NYC

just back from the 2nd installment I caught 2 acts tonight:

same crowd as last night, with added moms/dads/sisters/brothers of the acts, plus one Jennifer Connolly clone

first up was/were The Neighborhoods- although I lived in Boston/NH throughout the mid 70s and mid 80s I never really caught on to this band, although they must have played The Rat a million times.
They put on a high energy show tonight, possibly even more high energy than Nikki Corvette last night (if that's even possible). But what is it with the lead singer?? He is INTENSE, with wild eyes!!! They played about 10 songs, some of which (lyrics) were

WUSA
Tommy (or is it Johnnie) Was a Punk
The Prettiest Girl
Ready, Steady, Go ("I love the Beatles, I love the Stones)

maybe Randy or somebody could say more about what songs they were

And then, The Speedies!The lead singer (John Marino)said it had been 30 years since they had played together,but they broke up 25 or so years ago.

I wasn't too impressed with their set (until the last 2 songs), which included You Need Pop, Countdown, Avid Fan, Math Teacher....

They had boxes of cereal on their stacks (corn POP), which, by the time of their last song, they had taken down, opened up, and then threw the corn puffs into the audience. Sometimes an entire box at a time. Of course the audience threw it back at the band onstage; sometimes a corn puff landed in John Marino's eye and stuck there. He just picked it off/out of his eye and popped it in his mouth. And then of course the audience provided thunderstorms of beer, soaking everyone, so that you had corn puffs in your alcohol-soaked hair.

And then the big moment.."You might know this one"... The ultimate, mecha, uber-ichiban daisuki powerpop song of all..

When it was over the audience demanded an encore, and John Marino said that they had played almost every song that they knew. But there was one more song they could do... "roll up, roll up" for the
Magical Mystery Tour! It was a fantastic cover, almost out doing Photo!!

I left a happy man, as did everybody else.

Not sure if I can make Sunday night, with Jack Lee, The Go, and Milk 'n' Cookies.

Nice! You're an animal Schwenko. Me? I had to sleep for 10 hours to catch up. What was the crowd like Friday? Similar to Thursday? I gotta tell ya, it warmed my heart to see all these kids really into this stuff. There's hope in the world!

Sorry--as much as I saw them many times back int the day, I still dont know all the Nieghborhood tunes. Prettiest Girl and WUSA were their 2 most well known songs in the area--these were the ones that got the most airplay. Their shows?--Always intense.

Damn, my bf and I had tickets for Saturday night, but he ended up being sick as a dog with a 102 fever. It's a shame we had to miss it. He knew the Speedies back in the day.

"Ready , steady, Go" is a Generation X cover the Hoods used to play all the time.
