Lee "Scratch" Perry - NYC, June 14
Posted: Tue Jun 12, 2007 6:30 amOk, so Lee Perry is far from a New Wave act, but he certainly was around during the 80's. If you listened to any reggae from the 70's and early 80's, it's likely that Perry's "sound" had some influence-- even the UK bands such as UB40, Steel Pulse, etc.
Lee Scratch Perry is a living legend -- at 71 years old, this reggae pioneer produced hundreds of recordings at the helm of his Jamaica studio, including some of Bob Marley's early recordings. Perry figured prominently in the development of reggae -- roots, dub, dub-wise, you name it.
Perry is currently on tour with the backing band "Dub is a Weapon" -- and although I've never seen Perry in concert, you can be sure the sound will be thick, scary, hard-hitting "blakka den dred" dub.
I'm trying to decide between checking out Wednesday at Asbury Park NJ or Thursday at BB King's Blues Club in NYC. If anyone has any interest in checking out this towering figure in music, drop me a message. Doubtless in a few years, Perry will be gone (by age, acid or arson!)-- leaving us behind in a wake of echo and reverb.
