I'm going to the Shins concert in three nights. I'm soooo excited.[:D]
Has anyone else here been to see them perform? If so, what did you think?

Coincidentally, by two buddies that went with me to British Sea Power caught the Shins last week in NYC. They unfortunatley said it was a complete snoozefest, even getting "shushed" for talking during the concert. What fucking concert can people even hear you to actually shush you?! I hope your mileage varies 'cause I like the Shins a lot, but I can also see how if songs like "Australia" or "Phantom Limb" are done too bubblegum poppy in concert, they'd be a bore.

This is EXACTLY what I was afraid of... [:(] Though I like them much, their music is a little on the soft side, and I was wondering how that translates to a concert venue. The tickets were a gift so I'm glad I didn't pay for them, but I hope I don't get "shushed" because I am not going to sit and stare at them quietly for 2 hours or so! Hell, I could sit at home and listen to them on CD while folding laundry...

It's just one data point. Well, two. From elsewhere though, I hear they've improved a lot.

I just read some concert reviews that sound promising. The lead singer seems to take himself a bit too seriously, but the rest of the band likes to have fun, apparently.
Also, this concert is at "The Plex", and if they expect "quiet" there then they'll have a rude awakening for sure (the place is full of pool tables and other "games"). Besides, this is the South: God forbid anyone should tell a southerner to shush after they let out a rebel yell. lol.

So how was the show ?
I've seen the Shins several times here in Albuquerque, where they are from, years ago, when they were called Flake (and briefly, Flake Music). I also have heard their shows nowadays are more "professional", and more mellow, than their rowdy dive-club shows of a few years ago. They have since relocated to Portland, OR.

Okay, so I went to the concert and I'm here to report that it was GREAT!!! No "shushing" here. A lively crowd of probably several hundred people. The opening act was Vetiver, who played very well and were very complimentary to (but not a duplicate of) the Shins.
I thought it would be a "mellow" concert, because most of their music is, but they were able to weave their songs together flawlessly and keep the energy level at a good pitch. They were encored so enthusiastically that I thought the Plex would start crumbling. The encore they performed was "Breathe" by Pink Floyd. I think I was one of only 5 people there who were old enough to realize that. lol.
I would certainly recommend this concert to anyone and I will definitely see them in concert again when opportunity permits. [;)]
