Um...so...Marv...whaddya think??? [8D]

I'm not quite sure where to begin with the AWE-SOME that is THE EDITORS. I suppose I can ruminate on the pulsating, driving and relentless wall of sound that they define but I might begin to fall into rock critic cliche. I could dwell on the commanding baritone that Tom Smith bellows with authority (yes, the Ian Curtis comparisons are entirely credible - and dare I say it? A Dave Gahan feel is in there?) Perhaps the treble-y guitar that filled the room with showering exaltation deserves a paragraph all it's own? Should I fear bass neglect if I do so? It would be a shame to deny the bedrock that it is but what about the fact that that drummer is "no joke" either? My friends, this is one tight band - plain and simple. Some bands are known for being great live acts. THIS is one of them. Each member has his own charisma but that Tom Smith is without question one hell of a frontman. I personally was never bored for a second during the entire show. These guys are completely engaging, even during their lesser known songs. This was one of those shows you just didn't want to end. If you're looking for a new band to love and you're even slightly into the Editors, you must see them live so you can be hooked.

Of all the Next Wave comparisons to Joy Division, I'd say this is the most accurate. But they do have a character all their own so I almost feel guilty for calling them a sort of twenty-first Joy Division. In my humble view, the Editors have it all: blunt and cutting lyrics backed by dramatic music, all delivered with a true and passionate intent. . It just feels like a little bit more than trendy hooks. You just can't ask for more in an indie rock outfit.

I don't drool over alot of bands but I do so without shame when necessary. Long time regulars may even know how high I even place Obi-Wan Kenobi on the OWNERSHIP AND RULERSHIP scale. And if anyone has ever clicked on my sig line, they'll know how I feel about the dolphins. And I swam with those babies in Anguilla. So for one week and one week only, I'm switching the link in my sig to go to some live footage I took of the Editors tonight. These guys just f*cking OWNED it tonight.

Based on some lukewarm opinions from a couple of years ago and older youtube footage, they seem to have progressed a lot. The venue didn't hurt either - great sound and lighting, good crowd. Unusual that EVERY song in the set was completely entertaining, so I get what you mean by not wanting it to end.

Yeah, they ARE loud. How did that happen? It must have been where we were standing. I've taken video at shows before and gotten more balanced audio with better clarity.

I was still eight blocks away scarfing Thai food while Louis XIV played, so no idea.

Hot Hot Heat was disappointingly uninteresting. They utterly failed to grab my attention. It just felt like there was this general pall of tired Strokes mimicry in the air. I'd even say that they're a pretty good embodiment of the "boring white-boy guitar band" motif that I've ragged on elsewhere.

Thanks for the review...I just saw the Editors here in Seattle about 3 months ago, but am definitely thinking about going when they swing through again.

As for Louis XIV: based on their opening gig with the Killers last year, Thai food was by far the better choice. Pretty awful.

The Philly show was excellent. They are definitely a band to see live. Emotional, heartfelt, energetic, loud are words that spring to mind. They could have played another hour or so as far as I was concerned. The crowd was appreciative for the most part. Though a lot of them seemed unfamilar with their stuff. Alot of them were there for Hot Hot Heat. I saw about 3/4 of their set and that was more than enough for me. Skipped out on Louis XIV. All in all, a great nite. My only complaint was that they didn't play "Spiders".
