Attention all BSP fans, British Sea Power will be playing a free concert this Friday May 9th at 12 noon at World Cafe Live in Philadelphia. It is part of the ongoing "Free at Noon" concert series sponsored by radio station WXPN. You have to reserve a place. Tiks as of now are still available but seating is limited. I'm there! Let's see, meeting in NYC on Thursday. Drive down to Philly Friday morning. Attend short set and drive all the way back to CT during Friday rush hour. This puts me back home right around....Sunday! [:D]

Anyone need a lift from the city area down to Philly?

Well this was incredible. I cannot overstate what a truly fantastic surprise this set and venue was. I had no idea that the WXPN studio would be so nice - a large expansive stage, a top-shelf bar spanning the length of the elevated rear area, and a nice selection of mixed standing and seated floor area. The sound quality was great. It all made for an extremely pleasant afternoon delight. I'd forgotten how much I completely love hearing this band play...and it's only been a few weeks. Apparently the whole gig is streamed somewhere on NPR as well. Here's a pano of the stage I quickly stitched together:

Crazy crowd mix I might add. My guess is that not a large percentage came for BSP. There looked to be some grey-haired regulars...maybe radio station sponsors. Hilarious that there were also about 20-30 teenagers with brown-bag lunches, seemingly on a school field trip - what an education! And some of the 30 to 40-somethings back at the bar confirmed that this is something of a tradition among some locals. One couple spoke of having recently seen My Morning Jacket, Joe Jackson, Kate Nash, and The Raveonettes with Black Kids to come shortly. And all free in a fantastic venue. Freakin' amazing!

Afterwards, it was also nice to get my 12" vinyl signed by all six of the band. Noble briefly discussed that they were all "completely nackered" by partying and lack of sleep. When I suggested that perhaps cutting back on the drinking could help, he stared back at me with a rather blank and uncomprehending gaze. They still seemed energetic but surely must be ready for the end of this long 50-date tour. On to New York and Boston!

Alright Cubby, I need that report of Johnnie Brenda's. My friend said they seemed a bit tired but played the rarely-performed "Open the Door", a big favorite of mine. Curse my rotten luck! [V]

Well, yet again, I was called out of town. F***ING WORK!! That is 2 times now that I have missed out on them. Sounds like the Free At Noon show was great. XPN has come a long way since their days of playing one singer/songwriter after another. The venue is certainly one of the better places in the city to see a show. Oh well, I guess next time. On a lighter note though, I did get my Echo and the Bunnymen tiks for NYC today.
