I caught the Beat last night (May 21) in Hoboken, NJ. They sold-out Maxwell's and they were positively fantastic. The band was composed of Dave Wakeling and Lynval Golding of the Specials, and five other great musicians. No Ranking Roger, but this band more than held their own.

I can't recommend them enough. Here's the opening numbers from last night:

The band was smokin' hot-- fantastic bass and drums. Dave was so happy to be there, and they were all jumping around and joking and having a great time. I had never seen The English Beat before, so this was a real treat.

A Message to You Rudy opening...tremendous! I've it before here that I think Wakeling is one of the warmest, most engaging souls out there. Always puts on a great act. Must have been great treat to see it in such cozy environs.

I wholeheartedly concur..

Wakeling couldn't be a more gregarious performer who is still very much at the top of his game.

He and his band genuinely enjoy performing for the audience and one could only imagine what it would be like with Ranking Roger though IHMO you really don't notice his absence from the lineup

Saw them for the first and only time a few years back at the former 'Downtown' in Farmingdale and they put on a fabulous show.

Planing to see them at a free radio station event saturday, with Cracker, Bodeans and Cake as the headliner.

That's sure to be a lot of fun, Tileboy. Nice lineup.

The English Beat were terrific on Esplanade in Boston yesterday.

Glad you enjoyed yourself... the beat always put on a great show, saw them with and without Rankin' Roger, and Everret on drums, either way they put on a grand show and with a memebr of The Specials you get some other good tunes to skamk to! [:D]

I wish I had gotten better photos, but a contingent of 30 to 40 high school kids had staked out prime real estate right in front. The best part was they pogoed, fist pumped and crowd surfed throughout the whole set. Maybe there's mini ska movement going on ?

The Bodeans were ok, a little ho-hum for me, Cracker were good but I think the Cake crowd wasn't into them. As for Cake I'm not a big fan except for their best known tunes, but they're slowly growing on me since I've seen them 3 times now. My brother- in-law who's a fan keeps dragging me along everytime they're in town. They did a killer cover of Black Sabbath's "War Pigs"

The English Beat were a HELLUVA lot of fun back in the day!! They played The peppermint lounge in NYC quite a bit,those were some fun gigs!!
I understand the Specials will be reuniting (orig lineup)over the summer and touring.....lets hope they make it to the states.
