Inspired by an exchange on heroes between Marv and Ben, but this is for Anti-Heroes. Which and why?

Yum ... Alan Rickman. Hot IRL and super-hot as a cranky, potentially evil wizard. [}:)]

Oh. Wait. I got all flustered and bothered. I'm supposed to say why he's my favorite. Well, besides the carnal attractions (looks, voice and the fact that I love bad boys), his character just cracks me up. Dry, sarcastic, impatient--and usually spot on in the way he feels about others. Plus, he runs around in black robes and hangs out in a dark dungeon. [:D]

Vader. Incidentally, the Dutch word for "father".

Christ figure as tragic anti-hero, the Anakin Skywalker / Darth Vader dichotomy is an enduring example of humanity gone terribly wrong yet it is that very last spark of humanity in him that demonstrates the very, very best among us. Cobbled together from various cultural and historical models, the character takes it's place in the collective conciousness of world mythology with great plausibility.

The appeal of the anti-hero is a fascinating study. Though he is unable to fit into society and may go to great lengths to incite conflict, we root for him, pity, if not almost identify with the tragedy he has befallen.....we look for redemption through an understanding of pain. And below the surface often lies a method to madness: Hannibal only eats those unworthy of respect, Tony Montana seeks the approval of his mother, Travis Bickle defends the honor of prostitutes, etc.

The very name Skywalker seems to transcend the shackles of humanity and to be born a child of prophecy from such humble beginings and of divine conception, meant to help others, bring balance to the Force, bridge gaps between people and rise to be a hero of the Republic.....what can be more tragic than to fall from such grace and make a pact with the devil himself? To have nothing left to live for but the contract of evil after having been manipulated into destroying all that he had to live for, Anakin's physical and mental transformation into Vader - the death of his physical and spiritual self, his humanity - his rebirth at the hand of the devil on the hell planet, twisted, more machine than man - adds up to a delicious formula of excruciating hero tragedy for me.

In the end though, we are taught that after the shadow there is light - a most groovy lesson from Star Wars. This may be a little cornball compared to Vader's fellow anti-heroes but some may like a little salvation story along with their gritty, against the grain characters every now and then [^]

I had to not think about which was my favorite movie and stick to the topic. I went with Harry Callahan.

And leave it to Marv to educate me a little more on Star Wars. I never new Vader meant father [V] Damn it, i'm not the Star Wars geek i thought I was.

Another good one I thought of is Marv (Mickey Rourke) from Sin City. When the the bad guy priest ask him if he will get satisfaction from killing him he says "Killing? No. No satisfaction. Everything up until the killing, will be a gas." a true anti hero.

I had to go with Clint Eastwood as Dirty Harry in Dirty Harry but my girlfriend probably would have suggested Vin Diesle as Riddick in Pitch black.
