Thanks for the recommendations -- I'm going to try some of these before I shell out for the ACID upgrade. ACID is much better for production. I've also used mixmeister for live DJing, and it works reasonably well if I've taken the time to go in and tweak the tracks I plan to use.

Acoustica has some great stuff for producing
beatcraft and mixcraft
their CD burner is the best i've used too.... if u are novice at mixing this program will do it for you

PCDJ FX is also good for the novice
a free software available for editing and ideal for cut & paste projects is NEOSOUNDFX
