I'm actually a little worried about this. The first efforts to wirelessly or wiredly [sic?] port mp4 content to TVs have been pretty sketchy. Even looking at something as highly touted as Apple's iTV looks terrible on true HD - both compression artifacts and total size look WEAK.[/quote]
I agree too. I've ripped some music videos off of some of my DVDs into MP4 and it's not bad (I use a pretty high bitrate) but I'll bet artifacts are noticeable when viewed on HDTV. And yeah, I've heard less-than-favorable reviews for iTV and the quality of video content downloaded thru iTunes.

I only buy CDs for the stuff my flatmate doesn't buy! So yeah I do buy CDs still. That wya I can always put them onto my computer or ipod but have ready-made back-ups. I'm a fiend for not backing up my stuff and would hate to lose my music![8)][:I]

Well, since I joined this forum, I've started to buy CD's again.
Earlyer I bought at max. 4-5 CD's a year, now it's like 20-30.

I have a thing going on for the music-DVD's as well.
The recordcomp. should put more effort into making good musicdvd's with bonus stuff.
Then I would buy more...

Never anything "current". There's nothing out there that is worth buying....let me rephrase that, todays music offers nothing for my taste.

Used CDs are about all I get anymore.

I think this is terribly sad. I love CD's (when produced from quality sources), and to keep hearing how the sales of an actual physical product with artwork, etc, is on it's way out due to compressed downloads is just sad. I can always hear the compression, and some of the samples on iTunes just show how many songs have those horrible compression artifacts, i.e. a swirly sort of sound in the high end (cymbals, 's' words, etc...) I've heard for years the CD will disappear, and seeing it gradually happen makes me just hope a meteor finally smashes into this Earth. Dumb kids...

Heres the thing. In the Philippines, local cd'd by local bands only costs 5$ but hard to ind New Wave bands costs as much as 12 to 15 dollars. And they will order it first overseas.

CD Burns is one of the problems of our music industry.

Last year I bought a home theatre system that has USB ports...months later I realized that I hadn't played a CD on it because I'd been throwing files from my computer on a memory stick and playing directly through the USB port.

Having said that, I love some of the reissued CD's with bonus tracks and attention to artwork, liner notes, etc. The Duran Duran 81-85 singles box is a fine example of something you have to own, not download. A Flock of Seagulls "Listen" reissue, The Icicle Works first album reissue, etc. are things I want to own. But perhaps it is only through a sense of nostalgia...

Yep, I buy CDs. For local stores, I mostly buy used. For new CDs, I find myself using mail order because the local store selection sucks ass, or the price is too high. Well, most of the new stuff I want are EU releases, it seems. Not interested in some crappy US pressing of Depeche Mode remasters that rip you off (no SACD layer). Give me original Mute or give me death!

Like others here, MP3s (or any kind pay per download stuff) have no real value to me. I have bought a few digital downloads (lossless and non-DRM), but only because they were released on vinyl and not on CD.

[i]Regarding iTunes -- at first I was dubious about the quality of those 128kbps protected AAC files, but they sound good in headphones and I'm able to unlock them anyway. Here's hoping the new DRM-free higher quality songs from the EMI catalog are up to snuff.[/i]

The problem with lossy formats is that they're okay ... until you want to reconvert them to another format. Even if you're an Apple fan and have pledged allegiance to them, if they ever decide that AAC isn't catching on (which it isn't) and drop the format, you're screwed. Pay money for lossy downloads, but leech a securely ripped, lossless version from P2P. I'm finding that FLAC is getting quite popular on torrent sites.

Though I really want to be updated with those releases of my fave new wave bands, my resources are limited. Though some Depeche Mode albums are available, I can't find one of The Cure.

I missed my Cure cds back home in Manila. Maybe, just maybe, The Cure is not available here because of the song "Killing An Arab?" [:D]

I think a lot of us here were brought in the 80's and we were used to the idea of going to a record store to buy music. I don't think the kids of today have the same thought process which is too bad. I remember going to a record store and heading straight to a New Wave or 12" singles section to look for stuff. I remember picking up stuff and looking at the artwork and credits and trying to determine whether or not something was good. It was just fun. Can you imagine in a few years when there are no more physical cd stores?

[/quote]Yes, and Amazon.com is there for everyone, 24 hours a day. Though there will probably be used record and cd shops around for a while longer. We have Zia Records here in the Phoenix area, and I have spent plenty there in the past on used cds and a few new ones.

Yeah, going to the record shop is a full experience. For me, when I do online shopping, I don't really browse. I generally visit the online store to find some specific.

Yeah I'll spend money for a CD but I have to really want it and these are usually only by my favorite bands and then I always preview it before buying. I like the mp3 thing but I only use that when I go for walks or have to go shopping or something. In my car I prefer to have a CD. It'a a no win situation.
