Jim Ladd "Headsets"

Postby retrophil06 » Fri Feb 15, 2008 2:08 pm

some 20(?) years ago, I used to listen to Jim Ladd's headsets segment on KLOS 95.5, Los Angeles. Is there a list somewhere that documents all the "headset" albums that Jim Ladd DJ'd during his career at KLOS?

That would be a long list.

Ladd not only picked great songs but his drawn out, "train wreck", playing-two-songs-at-the-same-time, cacophonous segues are legendary. Nobody could destroy the beginning and end of a song like Jimmy.

I guess when you're hitting the ganja as hard as him, it all sounds good! And his spaced out, stream of consciousness, between songs rants only add to the fun. You can hear some of Ladd's pretentious "poetry" here:

A guilty pleasure indeed!

I AM glad there is some type of "free form" radio out there. Especially on a major commercial station. Didn't Ladd used to be on KMET back in the day?

I'll always remember Jim for playing those 9-to-12 minute songs no one would- Green Grass And High Tides, Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys, Pigs, Do You Feel Like We Do and, God, Led Zeppelin's Achilles Last Stand or Carouselambra, too... well even you hate that one.

My one favorite radio moment of Ladd is from his days with the mighty Met around 78 or so when Rocktober officially ended at midnight November 1st (halfway into his shift) and he refused to begin playing commercials.

In between sets he'd say the program director was calling to complain, the station manager was calling to complain and the station owner was calling to complain. He then announced he's no longer taking phone calls and has locked all the doors to the studio in defiance- it was just him and Paraquat Kelly against the world, just laughing it up (no doubt from sparking a bowl together).

It was hilarious at the time (and made for a funny story) but it later dawned on me that, while the part about refusing to play commercials was real, the rest was just radio schtick. Still, it was better than any of his social/political ed-op ramblings.
