I hear you there. Not only is there so much work to do beforehand, but the actual day off, I'd probably be worrying the whole time about if my kids have burned down the school or my classroom or some such ![:0]

I get about 5 or 6 weeks off a year and I save it up for one big lump-vacation in December or January, which is fine with me. I like that 3 week vacation around Christmas. I've been with my agency for around 15 years & I've reached the max level on accrument.

I'm taking next week off though with great plans to clean out my basement. Is that a vacation?

ETA - I suppose I should answer the original question huh? I take as many days off as I possibly can and I have no problem lying to get out of work.

I've always enjoyed vacations much more when they are by choice & I have a firm date that I will be going back to work on.

I can still remember the thrill when what I laughingly refer to as my career advanced to the point that I was actually getting paid for vacation days. F*ckin' great I thought.

Now, I hoard my vacation time and then try and take it in as long a consecutive stretch as I can. Partly because shorter vacations aren't enough to really unwind from work, partly because taking them in the form of long weekends gets me into the trap that several other people have mentioned; doing the same amount of work in less time; and partly because my wife's family resides fairly far away, so when we go to visit we tend to do so for an extended period.

I have noticed one big change over the years, before we had kids I tended to work a lot of overtime, since, almost none (although this required a change in jobs).

I have been very lucky at my work as well, being able to recruit, hire, and train good people that I can count on to look after the place while I am gone. Of course, I do work for the government, if it was my company on the line I might think differently...

I have an odd work schedule. During my busy time (which can last from two to six months, depending), I average 75 hrs/week, sometimes as much as 90 or 100. In the off season, the regular work week for my office drops down to 35 hours. I accrue comp time during the busy season--nowhere near an hour-for-hour basis, usually more like one hour for every four. Still, that plus regular vacation hours let me drop down to a four-day work week in the summer time, plus have a fair amount left over. This all/nothing routine at my office works well for people who can handle a lot of craziness and uncertainty, plus have a very understanding spouse. [:D]

Since the busy season ended I haven't taken a chunk of time, just days here and there. Luckily, in the slow season it's flexible enough that if it's a nice day I can just call in in the a.m. and say that I'm taking the day off. I took a lot of time off last year for health stuff (mine and my husband's) and oddly enough that has decreased my interest in taking time off this summer. Right now is my husband's busy time of year so we can't really go anywhere together.
