Folk Singer-Songwriter Robert Hazard’s Passing Quiets The Music World





Folk singer-songwriter, Robert Hazard died Tuesday evening at Mass General in Boston, Mass., he was 59.

A pioneer in the folk, pop and punk music scene in Philadelphia in the 70’s and 80’s, Hazard was undoubtedly best known for his mega-hit, “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” recorded by Cyndi Lauper and now reprised by Mylie Cyrus. But Hazard was proudest of his contribution to the songwriting world at large. He recorded for RCA Records and later for RykoDisc Records.

Robert Hazard (Rimato) is survived by his wife of 23 years, Susan Hazard, daughter Corrina, sons Remington and Rex, parents, Lilian and Umberto Rimato, of Strathmere, New Jersey and sisters Gloria Furst and Pam Tirone.

“Robert was a writer’s writer,” states his manager Jim Della Croce for his Nashville office. “Robert loved is family and his art. He worked tirelessly at refining his songwriting and definitely found his voice upon moving to the Adirondacks, where he, Susan and his family enjoyed their quiet pastoral life together. I spoke with him yesterday, for quite some time, and we were planning to meet at his Old Forge, NY home shortly upon his release from the hospital, next week. I’m truly shocked. The folk and rock community owes a great debt to this devoted artist and his final album Troubadour has been acclaimed as his masterpiece. I believe Robert was very happy and content with the road his personal life and artistic life was traveling. He’ll forever be remembered as a Philadelphia Folk-Rock icon and friend to the artist in us all.”

The memorial service for Robert Hazard will take place on
Friday, August 15, 2008 at 6:00 pm
at the First Unitarian Church of Philadelphia
