Jimmy Fallon Late Night

Three episodes in and these adjectives come to mind:

Unfunny. Unwatchable. Painful.

And months away from Conan returning to host the Tonight Show...

I can't figure this show out. It's half great and half trainwreck. The part I expected Fallon (and I'm not a fan) to do well at -- the monologue -- he is absolutely terrible. The part I wasn't expecting much from him -- the interviews -- he's actually very good. As for the rest of it, The Roots are fantastic. Best house band in years. And some of the skits have been okay. The writers seem to have more talent than the Conan writers. And by more, I mean some.

Did I mention the monologues are terrible? It's like they just pulled some schmo off the street and asked him to read some cue cards with no prep time at all. That fat New Yorker who played Jennifer Aniston last night could practically do a better job at the monologue. And he was illiterate.

I guess if the first 3 episodes are any indication, the show's going to turn out to be exactly like "Late Night with Conan O'Brien." Terrific band. Great interviews. Atrocious monologues.

I have to admit I lost interest and didn't pay attention after the monologue. Glad to hear there are some redeeming qualities.

I always enjoyed Conan's monologues. They were a bit of a quirky acquired taste, like Letterman but miles above a hack like Leno. Like Carson before him, Conan is a master at using self deprecating humor when things aren't going well, even making it a point to emphasize his own flaws to get a laugh.
