And the point of attending one of these tea-parties is... ?

Here are the main reasons, as I see them:

Complaining about the tax cut 95% of us will be receiving, and the return to Clinton-era levels for the remaining 5% (and is still lower than the tax-slashing Reagan era)

Protesting government stimulus spending which will help avoid a severe recession-- instead of repeating the policies which led to and prolonged the great depression

Expressing outrage over the bank bailouts, without which the economic system of the western world would experience a shock, panic and deflationary depression

Railing at the realization that McCain lost the election, the GOP lost big in Congress, and resulting malaise over Republican political enfeeblement

Boost FOX News and the right-wing think-tanks headed by Bush flacks Ari Fleischer and Dick Armey

Yeah, those are great reasons. In that case, a tea party is an ideal event for disenfranchised right-wingers, useful idiots and other disconnected dimwits who just woke up from an 8 year slumber.

Thank you.

I've been sitting here all day listening to various people cry about these "necessary" parties that will ensure that no one's God-given rights are taken away.

Um, what?

A bunch of people need to turn off Faux News and go learn a few things.

It's twisted, but I kind of like seeing these people freak out. I spent 8 years trying to keep my head from exploding, so it's their turn. (I had legitimate reasons, however, and these people are simply looking for monsters in their closets...)

I'm all for anything that will educate people on the "spend as you go" government policies of the last quarter century that both political parties are responsible for. And certainly these protests are a showcase of the rights of free speech and assembly.

But I guess the cynic in me asks, "How hard can it be to assemble a bunch of people on April 15th who are pissed about paying taxes and give them an outlet to show that anger"?

I saw several newscasts where reporters noted a lack of "opposition protests to the teabaggers". Wow, there's a news flash. How many people do you know who LIKE to pay taxes?

So while I'm for the sentiment, the historical signifigance of this esacpes me.

Plus, escapades like the Texas teaparty where nitwit Governor Rick Perry claimed that secession from the Union might be a good idea
makes it even harder to take these protest seriously.

The only thing I can wholey agree with them on is the bail out bill, wich was nothing but robery. I beleave that it was the talking down of the markets by the polaticians and pundits that caused people to panick and sell their stocks, thus causing the stock market crash.

They should have simply reasured investors that they should stay calm and be rational, and the Treasury should have then changed their policy to insure the saveings of citizens 100% to prevent a run on the banks and to prevent those who's money was in a bank that failed from loosing all but their ... I beleave the limit is $250,000? Wich is NOTHING, considering the ever growing inflation.

Perhaps more would have needed to be done from there, but I think this would have baught them time to plan a bill with oversight and a lot less spending. Everyone should be outraged that the government is puting our nation so deap in debt to countries like China just to give a big free handout to their corporate buddies after said corporate buddies' scam blew up in their faces. Some businesses DESERVE to fail while others deserve to prosper.

Just look at how Chase baught WaMu and Bear Sterns, refused the bail out money, and then proceeded to start their own Mortgage rRnegotiation program well ahead of the government's program. Chase is a responsible bank and gained new asets because their responsible behavior put them in a good position while other banks' risky investments and indiference towards mortgage holders caused them to fail. Chase reaps the benifits. That is how the economy is saposed to work.

You aren't saposed to feed money into failing businesses that have robbed people of their life saveings. I've heard that this is what Japan did wich caused their 'lost generation'. I haven't read up on it, but if history says bailing out failing businesses causes a long lingering recesion and stagnation, then gee, guys, maybe this bail out thing is a mistake.

Anyhow, back OT, I think those tea parties are pretty stupid. The curent situation doesn't relate to the Boston Tea Party at all. I guess it takes a meaningless metiphor to excite the media, but, um...how can anyone take this Teaparty crap seriously? Are my countrymen realy this vavid? And if they can't even form a coherent thought, can't they just riot at AIG headquarters or something relivent like that instead?

"Which is NOTHING, considering the ever growing inflation."

Inflation is a back-burner issue at this time-- the real danger is its evil-opposite, deflation. A massive asset bubble just burst, which destroys wealth/value, i.e. is deflationary. Considering how bad deflation is, I look forward to the future when we can just go back to worrying about inflation.

"You aren't saposed to feed money into failing businesses that have robbed people of their life saveings. I've heard that this is what Japan did wich caused their 'lost generation'."

We didn't rescue the banks to save failing businesses (which should be allowed to fail), but to save the financial system as a whole from panic & collapse. It's one thing to lose important businesses or a corp industry (e.g. Gen Motors), but it's a different story to have the banking system crash.

It would be like letting the power company fail and losing the electrical grid. Sure, a new, hopefully stronger power company would rise up from the ashes, but for how long could we tolerate no lights, no power, hospitals running on generators, etc?

The Japanese saved their banks but couldn't get credit flowing again, and their economy limped along for a long time. That's a real problem here, too, and something for which we'll need brains and luck to avoid.

An interesting comment I read on Reddit today said something like "If the media is so Liberal, why was there so much coverage of a manufactured tea-party event with maybe tens of thousands in attendance, and so little coverage of anti-Iraq war protests in the US and around the world-- which had hundreds of thousands of people?"

There are about 300,000 or so people in the U.S. who have gained EXTRAORDINARY wealth and power thanks to Reaganomics...the STATED goals of which were a miserable failure from the get-go. Now the jig is up. The super rich have stolen everything they can steal from us. We have a choice in this country. We can either become a Latin American style plutocracy OR we can reform the tax code. We must do the latter. Obama knows this. The only hope the Richard Mellon-Scaifes of the country have of maintaining status quo is to keep the Pavlovian hatred of the words "tax," "spend," and "government" at rabid salivating level. The Tax Day Teabagging was their first stab at the effort.
