Birthday Gift

You might be wondering what the title "Birthday Gift" means.

The title is in reference to the best birthday gift that I've received so far...my life. No, I'm not born again, it means that I almost died a few days ago. You read that right, I almost died and could have killed a friend of mine.

I was driving to work with my friend and co-worker the usual way we go and as I came up behind a car ahead of us, they decided to do a u-turn on the road in front of us. It was a two lane road and he was across our lane, the shoulder and part of the oncoming lane. I had to choose what to do and put on the brakes and try to get around him instead of hitting him head on.

The car spun around a few time, luckily no cars were coming in the other direction, and finally flipped the car onto it's side. We both had our seat belts on didn't received any real injuries. We both have whiplash and aches and pains all over. The car that caused this stopped to see if we were ok and then took off before we could get out and get the licence plate number. Nice huh?

I do have a rental for now and we shall see if the car can be repaired or written off which means that once I pay off the car, I won't have any money for another one. That will be fun.

The good part is that my friend and I are relatively good and with eight days until my birthday, I'm glad to be alive.

Glad to hear you and your friend are ok. Had a similar incident a couple years back where I was making a left turn and a guy decided to run the light. I also had to make quick decision, I swereved to avoid him hitting me and it resulted in my being upside down in a ditch beside the road. Nothing like unbuckling your belt and dropping onto your interior roof and looking for your cell phone and wallet in the dark. The guy who caused it also sped off before anyone could identify his auto. Happy upcomming Bday.

I am glad to hear you are OK, harley (and your friend, too).

About 5 years ago, the rental car I was driving in southern NM had a tire blowout, causing the car to fly off the highway and roll over 2 or 3 times. When it came to a stop, there I was, hanging upside down in my seatbelt. I scrambled out, thinking that it could blow up (you know, that stuff you see in action movies), and there's a couple folks already pulled over, amazed that I came scrambling out of the car. I was OK, only a wicked seat belt burn across my neck and chest. But boy, talk about a gift.

Glad you are ok!

I went through a nasty wreck about 13 years ago (a lady plowed across four lanes of traffic and a turning lane and t-boned me), and it was terrifying. I had a Dr Pepper in the car, and it exploded from the impact. When I finally came out of shock and realized I was in a ditch and really hurting every where, I noticed the drink all over me. I thought it was gas and nearly killed myself trying to get out of the car. Don't be surprised if you are pretty freaked out in any car in the future; to this day, when a car approaches my left side, I nearly panic.

My trombone was in my car with me. It was inside its padded, hard case but the bell was smashed up pretty good. I've never had it completely repaired--the worst of the damage was fixed, but it's still pretty beat up. I like to look at it because it reminds me that things can change in an instant. I doubt I'll ever get it fixed. I like the reminder.

Geez Harley, glad you and your friend are ok. I have racked up over 1 million miles in the last 20 years for work and I have seen a lot of horror on the roads. It pisses me off when you see and here of a**holes like the one that cut you off.

Holy shit, what a complete asshole that was who nearly killed you. You and your friend are indeed lucky to be alive. Stuff like this just puts everything in perspective. Nobody is immune to an unexpected death or serious injury.
