Resumes

Postby zill » Wed Aug 05, 2009 1:21 am

I'm hiring for a new position - the first time in almost 12 months I've hired anyone - and the resumes are plentiful and awful...a 20 year old that want to be President after learning the business for a year or two, a guy with 15 years experience crammed onto one page in 4 point font, one resume written in a foreign language (WTF?!?), etc.

My fave so far though is a Chinese lady who's experience includes working at the Beijing Institute of Supercritical Fluids Extraction. WTF!?!?!?!?! Is this code for working in a massage parlor!!!???!!! I'm inviting her for an interview to see if there's a happy ending to this story.

Considering your sway with Asian women, I'd have a hotel room booked...if for no other reason than to assess the quality of work she performed at the Supercritical Fluids Extraction Institute. Then, perhaps a quick bite at Foody Goody.

It is for a corporate accountant. I know, not very exciting...and neither are the resumes!!! [xx(]

They never let me hire the 20 year old admin assistants.

Was that a thinly veiled Clinton joke?

We didn't sell a lot of records, but somehow we left an impression.

I hear ya!

I've spent a significant chunk of time wading through people's CVs over the last few years, and the range that you get, from the professional to the pathetic is just amazing.

Certainly, allowing online applications really increased the amount of dreck that needs to be filtered. Lots of the resume equivalent of spam. People who apply for anything, regardless of whether they have ANY of the qualifications in the posting. Just applying for everything, hoping to win the lottery.

I gotta say though that the resume issue can go the other way. Where I work we have our share of people with a fairly well developed sense of entitlement, combined on occasion with a bit of a persecution complex. Nobody can do my work. Nobody would want my job, etc., etc.

A good cure for this has been to have these people participate on a hiring board and view the hundreds of CVs, many of them truly excellent, of people who are more than willing to do their job, and who are in many cases better qualified than the incumbent.
