My New York Record Experience

Took my folks out there for the weekend, had a great time, the Yankee Stadium tour is highly recommended even for Yankee haters- got to go in the dugout, the press box, the monuments and even the locker room. Jeter has two lockers, one for fan mail! Thurman Munson still has a locker that no one has ever used since his death.


Anyway, way more sightseeing than usual, didn't know if I'd have time to record shop but I did get a few hours alone in the East Village. Was disappointed in the few stores I went to- Finyl Vinyl, Gimmie Gimmie Records, Kim's was ok but the vinyl was a bit pricey so I only grabbed a few things.

Walked around the corner, between 7th and 8th Street on 3rd Avenue (I believe-Cooper Square???) anyway I stumble upon a store that has a cardboard sign that says all vinyl $1.00. I walk in, no vinyl in sight, the guy says go down the stairs. I walk downstairs to the basement and there is box after box of records (the owner says 40,000)! After three hours of digging through boxes and a sore back, I had to weed out the truly rare or perfect condition ones as my stack was huge and I had no idea how I was getting them back to Arizona. I ended up with 92 LP's and 12"'s, and he gave them to me for $80 and I lugged them around the corner and shipped them home for $60.

I guess the store is moving to 10th street and din't want to move all that vinyl, funny thing is, I don't remember the store name or what I ended up with, can't wait for the box to arrive!

I do think it was Normans, you may want to call first as I'm not sure if it was just the weekend or what.

I looked at so many, I really don't recall what I ended up keeping and what I ended up putting back.

Some things I do recall in my basket:

Blotto first LP
Gleaming Spires Party EP
Jet Black Berries, don't recall the title but one I've never seen before
APB first LP
and Lp's from Australian Crawl, Fashion, Roman Holiday, The Quick, Comsat Angels, Toyah, Pearl Harbour,The A's, Altered Images,The Nails,Fabulous Poodles, etc. (a perfect copy of The Colorfield's classic V & P!!![:)][:D][8D][:I][;)]
12"'s from Depeche Mode, China Crisis, Julie Brown...gosh I think that will give you the idea. Unfortunately no Velvet Underground Acetates but plenty of stuff I don't see very often when I'm out record shopping. I would guesstimate I went through about 70-80% of what was there but some of it was just a quick glance as I was running out of time. It was better than I could have ever hoped for and if I lived there I probably would have gotten at least another 100 or so records and would have stretched it over a couple of days. It was just pile after pile and box after box in no order. It was great fun but I was exhausted!

For the village, that's a pretty sweet deal, what, considering everything in the village is grotesquely overpriced. Not as overpriced as those Italian fools on gemm, mind you, but up there.

I guess I'm just spoiled having free reign of a postage meter at work, but I would have just walked out and found a, like, you know, post office. When you said 60 bucks, I had to check to make sure you didn't live in Canada!

Moments like that are priceless.
I used to go to estate sales and every so often come across some poor souls collection which his kids or family had no idea the value of. Well, value to a music buff anyways.

Actually the last time i scored anything good was quite a few years ago and i scored Bill Nelson, Images in Vogue, The Damned and some others. You're right though, most of the time it is crap. Perry Como Christmas, Richard Marx, etc.

Although I do remember finding a signed copy of the 12" Doctor Detroit theme by Devo. It was signed by Dona Dixon [:(]
