Is Gnarles Barkley "Crazy" just a tad over-rated?

I'd really value you your opinion about this one, since I know we're mostly all of the same age-range and mind-set (ie - relatively passionate about music).

While I would not say this song is lousy or anything, I JUST DON'T GET ITS APPEAL. Everyone is raving about this song - seasoned critics, 13-year-olds, college-aged hipsters, anyone. I know I'm missing something. This is really the 1st time I recall being so unreceptative to a song so loved by so many. Please believe I am definitely open to this TYPE of music.

I almost wonder if it's a case of "you would be admitting you are a stone-eared creep if you don't acknowledge the wonderfulness of this song, that all others so often acknowledge"

I'm not necessarily looking for others to say "yeah, this song stinks", I'd rather hear reasons WHY it is so fantastic. Because I have to be missing something!!

I don't like the song. It smells alot like the big music company ramming an artist down our mouths. Then the sheep don't even realize it and think this group is really hip.

I thought it was alright the first time I heard it. It was WAY overplayed though. Everywhere I went I would hear it.

I was in hot topic once and they were playing "Tommorow's World" by Killing Joke. So I hung out until it was over. I started to walk out as the song ended and on came "Pleasure and Pain" by the Chameleons so I waited till it was over, next up "Damaged Goods" Gang of Four. I ended up buying an Office Space postcard just because I was starting to look suspicious plus because it was cool. Nobody was the wiser that I was just listening to the jams and on the plus side their kick ass music made me make a purchase. If I were in High School I would work at hot topic and dominate the Music.

I guess "Crazy" does kind of suck just because I could listen to the above mentioned songs all day and still love them but not "Crazy" not even twice, does that make me "Crazy?"

I think that the track is a huge crossover success and deserves all the accolades.

I don't own it, nor do I have the desire to, but any song that touches listeners of all ages, races, etc. is OK by me. Not many new songs have been able to do that in the last few decades.

I don't know. I like the song a lot. I haven't grown tired of it at all. It's a song that appeals to a wide demographic. I have heard it on Top 40, Adult Contemporary, and Adult Album rock stations.

I'll have to add my two cents here, as well, and agree with Spaz..."Crazy" is a catchy track. It's one of the very, very few songs to come out since I graduated high school in '87 to really hold my attention for its entire duration. The very first time I heard it was over the muzak while I was shopping. I thought, "Wow, that's quite a comeback--Sylvester's made a new record from beyond!"

OK, I just dl'd this song from slsk, having not yet heard it. I like it. re: the post above, asking what is its appeal: it's got a swell groove, the sound is slightly reminiscent of old soul, it's got enough variation in its beat to be different...I dunno. Now I'm repeating a listen, and I like it a bit more. Interesting....

It seems to me that MOST huge crossover hits are "over-rated". The axiom, "You cannot underestimate the taste of the general public" applies here.

For example, look at all the great Clash songs. But their biggest hit, by Top 40 standards, was the unspectacular "Rock The Casbah". How sad is that? The same could be said for many other artists.

Having said that, I'm glad to see the success of "Crazy". Compared to much of what is played in the mainstream, it's like a breath of fresh air. "Crazy" is catchy enough, not too irritating and every time it's played it takes the place of what could have been another lame Rap or vapid Britney Squeals type song. Plus, I gotta give Gnarls Barkley extra credit for their awesome cover of The Violent Femmes' "Gone Daddy Gone".

Anytime a non Rap, NuMetal or lightweight Pop artist garners this kind of attention, it is a positive. If Gnarls continues to be successful, that's LESS music we have to hear by the latest in an unceasingly long line of wannabe gangstas threatening to "pop a cap in yo ass". And that's a very good thing.

Admittedly, the choice of quality Pop candidates has become so desolate, it's kind of like a political election where you throw your support behind the less of the nominated evils. Gnarls Barkley probably wouldn't have stood out amongst the great bands of the 80's. Oh how things have changed.

PS For what it's worth, Gnarls Barkley is up for several Grammy Awards including Record Of The Year for "Crazy", at The Grammys on Sunday, February 11th.

Just heard it & have to say - I LOVE it! On the other hand, I'm sure I'd get sick of it if I heard it all the time. There is a benefit to not listening to the radio...

It's destined to be played on adult contemporary stations for the next 30 years. It's the special hell reserved for those ever-so-slightly off-mainstream songs that programmers use to give some "spice" to such stations. 3 Doors Down's "Kryptonite", Goo Goo Dolls' "Iris", Madonna's "Crazy for You", Swing Out Sister's "Am I the Same Girl", and Hootie & the Blowfish's "Only Wanna Be with You" will all soon have deserved company.

My wife and I never liked or could understand the hype behind it. Seems like it was pushed to be hip and most people in the media and the general public don't want to not be hip and dislike something that "everyone" likes and says is great. If someone truly likes it, great, but I thought it was weak and very wimpy.
