Gas Prices! (URGH!)

Postby glokstadt » Mon Apr 21, 2008 5:48 pm

Watching Niteline tonight, as they reported that the average price for a gallon (at least it's not per litre!) nationwide is $3.51/gal., which means a 15 gallon fill-up is now over $50.00! Driving around in Los Angeles County I've seen prices between $3.79-9/10ths to $4.14-9/10ths fro regular unleaded.

When Bush came into office the national average was $1.47/gal.--a 200% inflationary spike in 7 years, did you pay go up that much???

I feel for you Max... I'm venting too!!!

Assuming par with the U.S. dollar, we're paying about $4.49 a U.S. gallon. My last fill was $73.00.

About 35% of the pump price here is various federal & provincial taxes, what's it like in the U.S.?

I'd say an extra .90 or .95 cents per gallon are Los Angeles County Sales Tax, Federal and State Road Taxes, somewhere around there, I could research it later if I'm not being lazy and have the time.

On another note, funny how Hillary had the beter answer on the debate than Obama, the people's guy shite, when asked about the price of gasoline at the pump... MaCain's talking about axing the federal taxes all together, and then how we gonna pay for the freeways, interstates, and pork-barrel projects???

It's like the answer Mark Mothersbaugh gave me to my question when I asked him back in 1984 while interviewing Dev-o: "Who you like in the upcoming election: Reagan/Bush I OR Mondale/Ferreo?"

He said: "Pick one: 'Shit-on-a-Stick' or 'Fried Shit!'"

Don't bust a hump over it. In Canada, every pump has a big pie chart sticker explaining who gets what from each litre sold - 35% Fed/Prov. taxes, 63% refining and distribution costs and LOL, 2% profit. Numbers are approximate...I try not to look.

Great quote from Mothersbaugh sums up my political beliefs.

So why doesn't everyone stop complaining and go out and by one of these?

Not stylish enough?
OK, try this:

So what are the hurdles - Price? Availability? Will leave us nothing to whine about?....I'm just saying....

I tried to talk my wife into a Smartcar, in part because she can never find parking at the train station, and because she only drives about 8K per year. No dice.

I'd like to see it hit at least $5/gallon. The sooner the better. [:D]

Just jumped it 26 cents a gallon today here in Louisville, now up to $3.69. But what are you going to do, they have you by the balls and they won't quit squeezing.

The federal tax on gasoline is only 18 cents (22 cents for diesel). State and local taxes vary of course.

According to some of the articles I've read, the biggest reason for the price increase is speculation in the futures markets. There is actually plenty of gasoline in the nation's inventories - by some counts they're at record levels, because overall US consumption is slightly down. The weakness of the US dollar accounts for only a small part of the price increase.

Luxury.......the price of fuel today in Sydney just hit a record high of $155.9AU a litre. Which adds up to about $5.62US a gallon. Fuel is still cheaper than a litre of Coca-Cola here.
Yesterday I paid $166.9AU for a litre of diesel.[V]

This should make us all a little more pissed off:

"The number two oil company in the U.S., Chevron, made $18.7 billion in profits last year, a 9 percent increase from 2006. ExxonMobil fared better, taking in $40.6 billion last year and $11.6 billion in the last quarter alone."

They have cars in Liechtenstein? I thought the four citizens might just hitch a ride with the King in his chariot.

The oil companies are laughing at us. And we still pay. Raise the price again, the people won't do anything...they will pay. Hahahahahaha! I can just picture them in their high rise offices drinking champagne and throwing gas on each other. The bastards!
