Coldplay: Greatest Band Of Their Time?

Hmm. I can't really say. They're not the style of music that I like; generally, I'm not a fan of the "anthemic, bombastic wall-of-sound" sound that they have. I haven't heard enough of them to make an informed statement. I REALLLLLLLLY like "Clocks", though.
I only bring up my limp .02 c. because I think this question is an interesting one for us old new wavers. We all love our old NW, and music today can't compete. Boy, do we sound like our parents, or what. But I know that for me, it's hard to be objective about music out there today. Some of you guys (Blir in particular) really keep up with some of the great sounds today, and you guys have the ability and desire to go seek it out. That is so awesome. I don't as much. However, I like a LOT of modern electronica. I see a lot of that stuff as an extension of new wave, all those synthesizers and such. But when it comes to modern rock/ stuff that is radio-friendly, well, it has a different effect. I don't know if this makes sense. It comes down to--for me, anyway---that it's hard to be objective about this stuff, what with the very-much-alive ghosts of new wave always lurking in the background.

I'd say they're better than Radiohead. I know I'm gonna get my ass flamed for saying this but I gotta say.....I don't get alot of Radiohead.

I'd like to retract my "no" vote and change it to a "yes". The thread title says Greatest Band of Their Time and I didn't read the opening post which reads ONE of the greatest of their time. Big difference. New Order will take the title of GREATEST of the time period we're discussing since they still released music during Coldplay's career.

but yeah, I think history will remember Coldplay, but much the same way we remember Hermans Hermits compared with The Beatles or The Stones, no sarcasm there, just they seem a little light in the 'blowin doors' (except for their head scratchingly large record sales of late) department....

so when they talk about bands of their time, say in the 2000's, I guess I'm wondering who is going to be The Stones or Beatles or whatever of that era? I will tell you, their new CD is really good in my opinion and you know I wouldn't steer you wrong![:D]

Hell No. They're a decent band at best. My niece loves them and makes me listen to their albums. They average two good tracks an album.

Having said that I freakin' LOVE "Trouble", "Yellow", "Clocks", and the second half of "Fix You" (hate the first half).

Rap is pretty dominant for this decade and there aren't too many bands that have the crossover appeal as Coldplay. All you people that said no, if not them then who????

Welllllll --- Of their time seems to be the issue ---- they would be dwarfed by the critics who tout Radiohead as the second coming if you broaden this amoeba like time line... U2 and a few others would top them....I think alot of people are drinking the coolaide® right now...the flame will burn a little less hot in a couple months and you'll have a clearer view....

White Stripes were the second (or third) coming at one point too...

<p align="justify">I say "fuckno" because clodplay is the lesser band in the Wuss Rock category. Their music is unimpressive and uninspiring drivel. One could just as easily listen to The Catherine Wheel, Inspiral Carpets, Radiohead, Kent, Belle & Sebastian, Travis, Aqualung, DeliSpice, and Melpo Mene. Whenever I think of clodplay, I think they're just an overblown keane and snow patrol: boring, bland Wuss Rock for college chicks and the guys who wanna get layed with said college chicks.
