I watched The Last King of Scotland. I don't think I'll ever need to see it again although it was very good. Forest Whittaker was astounding. I remember Idi Amin, but mostly all the stuff that came out after he went into exile. It was good to have some backstory to it.

I also watched Nashville. I know it's one of those "important" movies, but I really didn't care for it. I generally like Robert Altman's stuff, but thought this dragged & just didn't hold my interest. I thought all of the performances were great though - Henry Gibson and Ronee Blakley were especially good. I always liked Karen Black too, although she didn't have a lot to do in this other than sing. I was 13 in 1975, so not politically aware at all - but it was a great flashback & I at least understand now what the movie was about.

Oh yeah, was it my imagination or was John Candy an extra in one of the club scenes? Someone who looks an awful lot like him gets some extended footage & reaction shots.

The director and the producer (claimed to have been Tony Wilson's best friend and New Order manager) were there for Q+A afterwards. The film will be released commercially in the UK, but only on dvd in the Usa as things stand now.

e.g. I didn't know that Peter Saville had not even heard Unknown Pleasures when he selected the album art.
Interview with Annik!! (no D Curtis interview though).
Lots of talking heads.
In summary, I LOVED IT!!

I also watched this recently and was completely entranced. Forest Whitaker was completely stupendous. That scene where the Doc finds one of Idi Amin's wives in the hospital was sickening but arresting (as far as they know, that was based on true events, altho the movie arted it out a bit). I loved how they really played up Idi's (Whitaker's) charisma.

Also saw [i]Pan's Labyrinth[/i] last night. Very interesting. Wish it had had more fantasy, less realistic evil-Spanish-Captain-brutality. The girl who played Ofelia ws great !

Just got back from seeing Cloverfield (finally!) I did not heed XXX's warnings, and I liked it. It wasn't the greatest by any stretch, but a good "monster chasing & eating people while destroying a city movie." (Which is one of my favorite genres.) It's even better that it was a bunch of slackers getting chased & eaten.
I liked the panic scenes when the monster first hit - very well done. The rest...I'm willing to let go of my disbelief & enjoy the ride.

The most horrifying part? Realizing that a soda at the theatre costs $5 WTF????????? I haven't been to the movies in a long, long time I guess.
