WRONG. Listen very very carefully. Khatami was brought in as a reformer who promised the 18-28 crowd a "new Iran", one with open borders, open votes and progress into the international arena. What happened? The problem in Iran, as in any other theocracy, is that Iranian "progressives" have to go through the mullahs who actually rule the country. There is no actual freedom of speech or political rights. What constitutes freedom over there is directly attributed to what Khomeni and his ruling elite consider it to be. So, Khatami's efforts were like pounding your head against a brick wall. Without fundamental change to Iran's power structure, that is the elimination of the mullahs, reformers like him have no chance. Plus, Khatami was and still is a spineless beauracrat. This combination made him ineffective in his rule and caused those student protestors he courted to become disillusioned with him. Couple this with the fact that ALL parties and candidates have to get APPROVAL from the Supreme Religious Council and you get a situation where in 05 there was no one to take the "progressive" stance. The fact that they were barred from participating in the election and that most of the others boycotted was definitely washed over by you. Did this surprise me? Nope. Your leftist double-speak is very common but is easily overcome.

I did no such thing. The Palies are a different creature from the Persians and I believe the topic is on IRAN not Palestine. Palestinian elections are the freest in the Arab world, thank god for that. The fact that they turned to Hamas has nothing to do with the US or even Israel as much as it does with Fatah, the PLO and the insipid corruption that was cultivated under that HIV infected butcher, Arafat. Yes, they had a revolution against their establishment. Yes, they voted for a group that actively practices terror as a means of political negotiation. But what's lost is that Hamas has at least a clean record when it comes to corruption. That's what the Palestinians voted for, NOT their suicidal campaign of murder. Do you actually believe any rational Palestinian thinks Hamas will bring them peace and security? Please...
