I don't understand what there is to be proud of by not owning a cell phone. As a convenience and saftey measure owning a cell phone (as long as you're courteous of those around you) makes perfect sense, and not having one seems silly, except in the case of financial hardship.

I'm proud that I don't have one, either. I fully realize I sound like an anachronistic dinosaur (hey, I've been called worse !). But I simply don't need one. If people need to get hold of me, there's a perfectly good phone at home on which people can leave messages. I just don't feel the need to "always be available" by phone. If it's important, they know where to find me. But my time is my time...I do not need to have my time infringed upon by phone calls.

Look, maybe my argument is weak. Perhaps if I were a busy executive, or a doctor on call, or a real estate agent, or had children and was busy trying to coordinate everyone's schedules, then maybe...[i]maybe[/i] I could see the use for one. But I am not, so therefore I do not.

Also, and I always maintain this, we all managed fine back in the days before cell phones. If you were a kid at school, and your mom or dad had to get you an emergency message, why, they called the school, who would in turn deliver your message during 4th period...and that was that ! Everytime they talk around here about banning cell phones in schools, all the parents immediately sqwak about "oh no! But I need to be able to reach my kids RIGHT NOW!" I call bs on that. Your kids are fine in school. If you have a message to get to them, they can wait 'til they receive your message later in the day, just like we had to when we all went to school. I just don't buy these types of arguments.

Again, I understand if you are a doctor on call, or a busy busy executive, or some other kind of profession where it may be essential to reach you by cell phone. But for the vast majority of us, that's not the case. Also, I understand that many people DO like to be in constant touch. They like the convenience of being to call anyone, anytime. Or be called anytime. I am just not one of those people. If there's an emergency, I can always get to a phone or a [b]payphone[/b].

So my defense in being proud is mostly being stubborn. Everyone has a cell phone. That doesn't mean I need one. The way I see it is that I'm kind of bucking the system. When they get rid of landlines completely, then that's when I'll be forced to get a cell phone.

Well I definitely need my because of the fact that I'm a parent. In fact you probably didn't realize THIS end of it, KYYX, but cell phones have become so much the norm that schools now expect parents to have one on them at all times. One time my son got into a fight at school. The principal tried to call me but I didn't answer my phone because I was at a gas station pumping gas. She tried to call my husband at work, but he was in a meeting. She called my cell phone back and left a message stating that in this modern age there is no excuse for her to not be able to get in touch with us and that if we didn't respond in 5 minutes she was going to call the police. Fancy that! (The bitch.[:(!])

I also like having it for safety- such as road trips, and for traveling. It's so much easier to connect with your travelling contacts when you've already got their # saved on your phone.

Other than that, I try to remember my cell phone etiquette. Truly some people do get obsessed (like those with Blackberry thumbs), but like all things it's good in moderation.

Wayne knows of what he speaks. I never had much use for a cell phone, either... until I spent a fun-filled 15 hours stuck in mud. (Feel free to laugh at my misfortune. I do.) Believe me, it's a lot easier to push a few buttons and call for help than it is to wait for help to find you -- if it ever does.

Now the iPhone. That, I have no use for.

And trekds, if you want music from Oz that US audiences never heard of, I can probably find you a better example. I won't have to look any farther than, oh... every other Aussie record ever made.

that's a crazy story. That principal sounds a bit heavy-handed. Sorry to hear about that. It's not the case here (yet, anyway). Schools will call parents at work, at home, and emergency contacts rather than try to mandate cell phone use. Altho like I said, it's normally the parents who sqwak when cell phone bans (in schools) are being discussed. And it gets brought up constantly. The schools and the teachers hate cell phone use during school hours.

I hear you about the parents. I'm one of the few parents who punishes my child if he DOES bring his cell phone to school. Of course, he thinks I'm evil (he's right) and his friends think I'm a dragon lady (if they only knew! lol); but I maintain that if he's in school and all his friends are there then who does he need to call? Furthermore, I feel that it's a distraction in class, so I'm saving him from being rude and/or getting into trouble.

You remember that summer camp I told you about that my son went to last summer? Well, he was chosen as 1 of 6 out of hundreds of students. It was a scholarship funded event and the scholarship was about $2000 per student. On the day that they were to meet the bus for summer camp, 4 kids never showed up. Later we found out that they and/or their parents chose for them NOT to go simply on the basis that these kids couldn't take their cell phones with them! This is a HUGE summer camp associated with Clemson University- pay phones and office phones EVERYWHERE, but these kids didn't want to go because they couldn't take their cell phones! About $8000 in scholarship money was lost because these same students and their parents couldn't be bothered with calling the school and telling them that they weren't going so that maybe some other child (there WERE alternates) could have gone in their place.

All because of cell phones.... Now you know what South Carolinians do with their state/federal education funding. [V]

Back when I was in Jr High (1976-1978), I was on the wrestling team and drama club. After practice, I would call home for a ride... I put a dime in the pay phone, dial my number, and when mom answered the phone I would quickly say "Pick me up" -- if you ended the call within 3 seconds you got your dime back.

...so having a cell phone would make that easier.

you think THAT'S cheap? When KYYX moved away, we used to mail each other letters ALL the time. We used to use the same stamp over and over. We'd put matte scotch tape very carefully over the stamp so it wouldn't get postal marked. LOL. I think we used the same stamp for about 6 months, or like 20 times. Hee hee.
