Atheists most distrusted "minority" in US ?

Postby KYYX4ever » Sat Mar 25, 2006 7:32 am

I suspect some here might find this news v. interesting...

MINNEAPOLIS / ST. PAUL (3/20/2006) -- American’s [sic] increasing acceptance of religious diversity doesn’t extend to those who don’t believe in a god, according to a national survey by researchers in the University of Minnesota’s department of sociology.

From a telephone sampling of more than 2,000 households, university researchers found that Americans rate atheists below Muslims, recent immigrants, gays and lesbians and other minority groups in “sharing their vision of American society.” Atheists are also the minority group most Americans are least willing to allow their children to marry.

Even though atheists are few in number, not formally organized and relatively hard to publicly identify, they are seen as a threat to the American way of life by a large portion of the American public.

EDIT: Note that the above is just a press release - the actual study will be published next month in the American Sociological Review.

There is a reason why I don't trust sociology majors and it's not because they can't do math and suck at science... oh, wait...

I've always wondered if atheists go to heaven or hell when they die, considering they believe in neither. Limbo, maybe? [:D]

I rank Atheists slightly below Vegans and only slightly above active Scientologists on the weirdo meter.

I don't see them as a threat to America however.

LOL. See us as a threat? Of course you don't. No one with an IQ over 80 would. But tell me Jimbo, are we more or less of a threat than some lunatic commander in chief who thinks he's on some kind of a divine mission?

Oh, and since we're ranking shit, I would rank scientology equally with all other religions. Exccept Wicca - that at least makes some sense.

I have a much easier time with atheists than religious fanatics. I don't agree with the atheist belief of non belief, but who cares? Some of my closest friends are atheists, and they don't hold it against me for my belief in God. What makes me sick about organized religion (which has NOTHING to do with what's taught in the Bible) is the very un-Christ like attitudes of intolerance. Motors, the REAL Christians (or Jews, or whatever, excluding those nutty muslims) don't judge others, but try to work on their own salvation, and try to lead by example, not by fear or ridicule. When lashing back at the pinhead so-called religious representatives, please try to remember that they disgust real christians as much as they disgust you and yours.

If you mean GWB Motors?
Yes!
Wanna ask why I say that? [:D]

Seriously, that whole GWB wants to turn America in to a Talaban like theocracy is just a bunch of crap spread by Bush haters.
Everyone not to the left of Fidel Castro pretty much stops listening to you after that line rolls off your lips.

That carries about as much intellectual gravitas as saying Bill Clinton had Vince Foster killed and robots are stealing my luggage.

Oh, I get what you're saying hutter and I wouldn't have anywhere near as much problem with religion if it didn't poison every aspect of life with all of the problems it causes. But the fact is that it does, no matter how well intentioned you and others like you may be.

So you're answer then is yes- that GWB is less of a threat to America than atheists? That's quite possible the craziest statement I've ever read on NWO. Wow, hope you don't miss whatever credibility you had left.

Who says I'm well intentioned Motors? [:p]

Personally, I'm pretty close to Hutter's POV.
