What the hell is this American obsession with turning every fucking thing into a syndrome or disorder?

Remember when Attention Deficit Disorder was called "being a spaz"?

Remember when Social Anxiety Disorder was called "being shy"?

well... from what i know about it Attention Deficit Disorder and Social Anxiety Disorder are disorders that can gradually turn into more serious afflictions. Social Anxiety Disorder has many debilitating effects, like i'm sure you've heard about people who become house bound.... as far as PMS goes, i think it classifies as a syndrome with a syndrome being defined as a "condition, illness, complex, disorder, affliction, sickness" kind of like the way a diver may experience "inner-ear syndrome" why are you brits so tense anyways with yourPre menstral Tension [;)]

I've always had a beef with the the whole ADD thing. When I used to work with younger kids at an after-school program,(a job which I loved), we used to call Ritalin "Mommy's little helper". IMO--and this is just my opinion--ADD is just a normal, active, slightly hyper kid whose parent(s) don't have enough time for them, who can't give them enough attention, a kid who eats too much sugary foods, empty caloric junk food who watches way too much TV. My main defense is why suddenly a name for this so-called "disorder"? When the pharmaceutical companies came up with a pill, that's when the spazzy or hyper kid we all remember disrupting our classes when we were kids suddenly had ADD. Ridiculous!
I realize there are those who say ritalin helped them, but I also think it's something behavior modification/ therapy/ parental affection/ discipline could fix better, without doping some kid up like a zombie. (Have you [i]spent time[/i] with a kid after they've gotten their ritalin? they're like a zombie! Did you know you can get a hyper kid to calm down by giving them a sip of Coco-Cola ? It's true--the caffeine helps their brains focus. Did you also know that ritalin is pretty much speed? if a non-ADD person took a ritalin, they'd be all hyped up!) Pharmaceutical companies, faced with harried, stressed-out parents, have this one in their pocket.

I do not mean to offend any parents here whose kids are helped by Ritalin. If I did, I apologize. I just am quite against this made-up diagnosis.

My cousin was a Ritilin kid and crashed down real hard. He refused to take it on the weekends but was addicted and had to take it again Monday morning just to make it through school. Very horrible. I am looking forward to Michael Moore's next movie which will no doubt cover this topic.

Anyway I am really looking forward to Toe Jam's opinion of the "topic within a topic" in this thread. I hope you read this thread Toe Jam--I want to hear your 2 pence worth lolly lolly lovey love.[;)]

Like Avoidant Personality Disorder. My mother has that. She had a great sixth sense as to the exact moment my buddies would be coming over. It was her cue to go lock herself in her room and hide. Never took us anywhere. Never did anything with us. Wouldn't answer the phone or the door. For all I know, she thought her kids were against her.

But there's one of those silly American obsessions again, right. (She's Irish, if it makes a difference to UR.)

ha! that's better than my adoptive mum pretending she never knew my real parents when....shite...nevermind...this isn't a "one up-person" thing but as Phillip Larkin said "they fuck you up your mum and dad"
