For anyone on the fence about backing up their music and data or mirroring their whole collection, there can't possibly be any more excuses now. I pulled into a CompUSA yesterday to see a wall full of Acomdata 250GB external drives in nice metal housings, ready to use. These things are getting cheap! Even if it's not that well known a manufacturor and you only use it as a secondary or backup, sheesh, you just can't beat drive prices these days. I mean, four of these gives you a TERABYTE for $400 - even grumpygirl and dunamis could mirror their whole collections! [:0]

That's the exact one I use for all my digital restoration work, it has been flawless.

I just bought a Maxtor 150 Gig Hd for 150 bucks a month ago. I might have to spring for one of these for mp3 storage.

But pray tell, is it easy to use? I was going to get one this weekend and I need something easy. (and can it core a apple?)

I swear it's easy Philly. Truly Plug and Paly. Buy the USB2 one.

But like we discussed before, make sure you have USB2 and not standard 1.1 on your PC. It will be too slow if the latter. The way to find out is to right-click My Computer > Properties > Hardware > Device Manager > Universal Serial Bus controllers and see what the properties say. It may also just say "Enhanced Universal Serial Bus" which is USB2. If it doesn't specifically say USB2 or Enhanced, then it's an older 1.1 and you'll have to add a card. All newer computers should have 2.0.

BTW, older Mac folks with FW400-only should obviously opt for the FW400 drive as USB1.1 with a 2.0 drive will be too slow as well. Newer Macs with USB2.0 can use either - I find FW to be more stable but USB2 offers cross-platform compatibility since most PCs don't have FW.

I have an external hard drive philly. Trust me, if I can figure it out - you can.
It's awesome to have - I've been able to digitalize so much stuff & back up tons of thing!

Um, you up for installing a card inside your PC? It's really very easy. Honestly. If you go to CompUSA for that too, they'd be able to recommend one for less than $15. Or is it just time for a new computer?
