IMPORTANT ANNOUNCMENT!

Postby MikeP » Fri Apr 14, 2006 10:26 am

Notorious troll-meister 'Andy' is back at it and he's been trying to hijack member accounts by trying out simple passwords (generally those that match the username), so I advise all of you to change your passwords at your earliest convenience by going into your Profile and updating your password. This guy has been nothing but a total disruption and a desperate attention-seeker.

Don't let it happen to you!

That's a shame, these poor people create accounts on here (maybe post once or twice) They come here to talk and have fun, and only to be destroyed by some creep with no life.

Mike,

Is it possible (or even desirable) to allow a guest to post to the board without creating an account? These guest posts would need to be approved by a moderator.

The rationale for this suggestion is that there are probably a lot of people who just want to ask a question and move on. They don't care about password security. This creates unused accounts that trolls like Andy can exploit.

In a perfect world I wish it could work out that way, but alas, no. Everyone who signs up now has to have a valid email address or they won't get in. It's people like Andy who drove me to tighten security to this level.

Personally, the whole anonymity thing has been abused to the max and I'm not particularly fond of it anymore, with all the fake usernames, spoofed IP addresses and bogus profiles. Besides, I think there should be some level of personal responsibility and accountability when participating on a discussion board such as this. There are plenty of options for people who wish to remain anonymous, like disallowing people to contact them via email and keeping their profile minimal.

Sorry, maybe I'm just venting a bit but me and the mods have seen our share of flagrant abuse in recent months.

If you align the letters in the title just so, you'll see 4 N's connected diagonally.

On edit and on topic: Sorry if my suggestions were simplistic. I work on a product where an administrator can set up complex password requirements for business systems, but I'm guessing that there's not similar products for bulletin boards. I was trying to think of a way to make it harder for the Andys out there, but I have no idea what all you have to do to keep them at bay. I appreciate your efforts (and the other moderators' efforts as well).
