Bullshit! I know plenty of lifelong Goths (I'm in New Jersey.."Goth Central"...more Goths per square inch than anywhere else in the world) and I don't know of any who fit that profile...that includes "Neu-Goths" of the Evanesence variety.

That article is just so sad... makes me wanna kick the computer and then cut myself (joking!!!).
Now really, not only goth people wnat to hurt themselves... it has nothing to do with whihc music do you like. It's more complex thna that.. has to do with a person's personality, interaction with society and history.
I think that "labelling" sometimes just ruins it all. It's way easier to have evrything under a category, but not all things can be judged and collocated into a place.

I'm sorry Mechi but I have to disagree with you on this one. Robert Smith, however adorable, is a train wreck. Actually as an old fogie, grunge seemed more harmful to teens than goth, (at least goth had an image other than "I am a loser and I don't shower or bother with a look or learn how to play guitar.") but I got into goth because I became a suicidal teenager. I could have told you everything this article has to say in 1987. (Other than the mathematical statistics) 47% have attempted suicide? I must confess to being shocked by that high of a number. I was suicidal but never attempted. I listened to goth in the late 80's because of my depression. I'm glad I got out of that. I still spin the Cure in my player once in a while, but now it is nostolgia as opposed to being 17 and laying on the floor blasting my headphones crying.

I think that was the case...but I really dont think its so anymore.
The goth image ran into the ground and now they are as scarce as filled seats at a current Marilyn Manson concert.
They are there, but now they've been replaced by the ghetto-wannabes.
I think that these people my age are more likely to harm other people instead of themselves. Speaking from someone who just escaped from high school, I can tell you that the goth crowds are a lot smaller than the pimp-wannabes.
Rap is more prevalant than heavey metal...etc.

Today- its more about material wealth and the faluting thereof. The degredation of women, and the intentional and pathetic attempts to slaughter the English language at some idea of pretending to be different and original while only talking like a retard is now the focal point of us today.

Now, someone else is going to bash me about this.

ROFLMAO!! Escape---THE PERFECT WORD!! Leaving High school was one of the best things that ever happened to me.

And I believe in a different thread I mentioned that young people now would hurt others rather than themselves but I can't remember where I said that. At least I know I was on to something.[;)]

It was so long ago it's hard to remember, but I do recall contemplating it often. How do I get a gun? When can I be alone long enough to bleed to death? Do I go downtown and jump off a skyscraper? (plenty of big ones here in Chicago)

I was too ignorant to know what would be a foolproof method of suicide so I would just cry about it instead. At age 20 I decided to drink myself to death. But that takes a long time. Once blood started coming out of orifices they shouldn't have, I sought psychiatric help. To quote John Astin from Night Court: "I'm much better now." [:D]

Escaping school has also been one of the best things that happened to me. I remember my last day of school when some younger friends asked me: Aren't you sad that school has finally ended for you? And I answered: No, this is one of the best days of my life...I'm free.
And it was true... and I'm glad that I've got the chance to be free and to decide on my own.

Hee hee, it's so long ago I can laugh about it now, but I contemplated suicide pretty much every single day from twelve to sixteen or so. I even composed vicious suicide notes intended to MAKE MY PARENTS SORRY. My plan was to take some of my mom's valium and then cut my wrists in the bathtub, but I was really torn about what to wear--it would be very undigified to be found in the nude but how silly to climb in the bathtub wearing clothes. It was this dilemma that kept me alive through those years.

That doesnt work nowadays.
A friend of mine- had me throw a toaster in the tub while he was in it. And the breakers tripped before anything could happened. He jolted and freaked out a little, but the switch turned it all off before it could hurt the guy.
All in all...he never went through with it. But its OK, cause hes in jail for having sex with animals.

I never took all of that Goth stuff seriously because they all look like circus clowns to me. Anyone in a fright wig and pancake makeup is someone I simply chuckle at, including Robert Smith who's a fave of mine but sorry...looks ridiculous. I mean, I don't take Ronald McDonald seriously and aesthetically he's got a lot in common with Marylin Manson...just a different color scheme.
