Drunk? Assuming this politician can tell the truth, maybe he really wasn't drinking.

But does it really matter? There's the stupid part. Down some Ambien with a Phenergan chaser and you can plan on waking up, oh I don't know, maybe next week? If you're planning to take some Ambien, I suppose you're planning to call it a night, not head out to the supermarket.

He had better get slapped with a Driving While Impaired, but that probably leads to a slap on the wrist.

"There is some truth to his Ambien defense though. Some people on Ambien find that they've gotten up and driven somewhere in the night, gorged themselves on everything in the refrigerator, cruised through the neighborhood, etc.

When you dream there's a chemical in your brain that sort of "paralyzes" you (can't think of a better word,)so you don't actually get up & start running if you're running in your dream, etc.
Ambien can block that chemical in some people."

His excuse is valid - although who can tell if he's being truthful in the first place.

I'm pretty sure this "under the influence of Ambien" will become a popular defense soon - particularly for this type of thing, or leaving the scene accidents.

The effects of drugs like ambien on sleep architechture can vary dramatically. In March of this year several reports of bizarre behavior in people using ambien was reported in the lay media. This included "sleep driving" as well as "sleep eating". Previous this was only common in patients who misused, took other drugs or alcohol, or abused the drug. The report below is from Medscape:

Driving, Other Erratic Behaviors Reported After Taking Zolpidem

March 24, 2006 — Zolpidem (Ambien), a nonbenzodiazepine, sedative-hypnotic prescribed for the short-term treatment of insomnia, has been associated with increased numbers of impaired driving incidents in Wisconsin during the past several years. Although the label directs patients to take zolpidem only when able to devote a full 8 hours to sleep, and cautions against operating heavy machinery or motor vehicles, the patients involved in these incidents have driven while under the influence of zolpidem. Some of these drivers have expressed their belief that they were "sleep-driving," saying they have no memory of the driving incident.

"A 'typical' Ambien driver will demonstrate erratic, unsafe driving, often with wide lane deviations, many crashes or near–head on collisions, or unpredictable, bizarre driving maneuvers," Laura J. Liddicoat, BS, supervisor of the Toxicology Section at the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH) in Madison, told Medscape. "Their physical symptoms include a profound loss of balance, so pronounced that the standardized field sobriety tests, such as the walk-and-turn and one-leg-stand, are usually discontinued for fear that the subjects will fall or otherwise harm themselves. Cognitive abilities are greatly reduced; subjects are often confused, disoriented, have a slow, delayed response and reduced short-term memory as displayed by needing instructions repeated numerous times and not recalling recent driving events."

At the 58th annual meeting of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences on February 28, Ms. Liddicoat discussed 6 cases of impaired driving related to zolpidem. These cases were identified from drivers stopped for impaired driving with alcohol concentrations below 0.10 g/100 mL, which is the testing protocol at WSLH. Blood levels of zolpidem in these drivers ranged from 190 to 4440 ng/mL. The peak of a single dose of zolpidem is about 110 to 115 ng/mL, according to the drug's package insert. Drivers with a level of 190 ng/mL had 3 or 4 other drugs detected.

So a Kennedy crashes his car into the white house, gets out, stumbles and says its not his fault he is on ambien. Me or you would be in jail right now. Oh lets face it, he was plastered.

The point is that he was driving while under the influence of some drug or alcohol hence the crash, stumbling, slurred speech, etc. If he's going to be in the business of upholding law then he has to be the very first to be subject to it. And the same goes for the officers on the scene. Their unprofessional handling of the situation has to have a repercussion.

Ted is a repeat offender. He drove off a bridge drunk in his younger days and the woman he was with, not his wife, drowned. He left the scene and came up clean.

The guy has always been a drunk, the Kennedy least likely to get ahead. If his brothers were alive Ted would live in their shadows. My theory, Ted is a sociopath, had his brothers killed and than killed MLK because he suspected. Seems more likely than three unrelated murders or some unknowable conspiracy don’t you think?

Totally agreed Marv. The cops on the scene were going to give the proper tests until upper brass told them not to.The police union is pissed as they should be. But this goes to the highest level so it will be covered up as always.

The MA police must have a standard protocol for Kennedy’s and lots of practice by now

True but his family members weren't dead yet when he killed that woman. Apparently she could have been saved had he not left the scene. She drowned in fairly shallow water with only minor injuries from the crash. The excuse for the accident and for leaving, he was too drunk to know what he was doing. Can you imagine what would happen to you or me if we did that? Even in the sixties.

Think of what a pompous jerk he is. His brothers got the brains and the heart, Ted got the looks. (believe it or not) What has he ever done with all his money and power except ride his brothers glory.
