dateline

the entire thing is too wierd, and in no defense of the men getting popped...men in general are always thinking about sex in one form or another...obviously most can apply the mental "brakes" in time, before any destruction occurs and some, like those dudes on dateline, pick up a couple six packs and just "floor it"...but what bugs me the most is the "13 year old" on the computer, showing body parts on cam, all lonley and begging them to come over and getting dissapointed when they want to back out...we are watching an actress(over 18 yo) working for the police and (for our viewing pleasure, thank you[:(])NBC...who has got script in front of her...ok...if in reality this was happening and i am sure it is...in addition to the men, the parents of any 13yo girl with the freedom, sexually and otherwise as that actress portrays should be scrutinized and exposed along with the horny mindless men...and then big time therapy the little girl to find out whats bugging her/what family member or close friend molested her?? because its not normal for that to be occuring..FORGIVE ME FOR SAYING THIS BUT,..i couldnt help think that the girl really wasnt a potential victim, but a willing participant.very sad indeed.

The most important thing to understand is that a 13 year old cannot make an informed decison on sexual activity. I don't care how savvy a kid might appear. In reality I'll go as high as 17. Adolescents do not have enough life experince, most often do not have good information on contraception, most are unaware of their own mortality and safety to make healthy decisions about something like this.

Kid's look for adult approval. Predators know that & use it to draw children in. When a grown up engages you & talks to you like an equal - that's a pretty powerful thing for kids. It builds trust, and leaves them open to exploitation.

It is an adult's job to not expose them to abuse, victimization and exploitation. It is also an adults job to not engage a child in sexual activity. Plain & simple.

Overly sexual behavior in adolescents can be an indicator of past or current sexual abuse - but not always.

Kids get on the internet to try out new personas, test out new things - it's a normal part of adolesence. Unfortunatly, some of them test out their boundaries in a sexual way. For many kids - talking, dressing or acting very sexual is just another part of that testing boundaries.

I didn't see the most recent shows - but the point of drawing the predators in when they want to pull out of the meeting, is because often times resistance is a tactic abusers use. They thnk by doing that it releases them from responsibility - and they can claim they were worried about this kid & were only coming over to "set them straight."
They also are on guard & know the person they may be speaking to, could potentially be in law enforcement. They may think they can claim "entrapment." They cannot - it does not work like that.

I agree that sometimes parents are at fault. But you can't paint everything with such a broad brush. Ask any parent if they know everything their kid is up to. They may say yes, but in reality - did our parents really know everything we were up to? Has something changed in child monitoring in the past few years? I don't think so. So many kids are so much more savvy about the internet than parents.

I would never excuse the behavior of an abuser. I would never blame the victim - if it's child abuse, sexual abuse or domestic violence. Personally, I feel the shows were a great eye opener for parents - especially those who are clueless about the internet.

Well said wolverine..

It calls to mind how pervasive underage internet exposure has become with all the chat rooms, blogs and now video posting sites like myspace and youtube.

Since having discovered youtube, I am floored by what has been posted by some of these kids not to mention some twisted and vile adults(via cameraphone, digicam and webcam).

Sure the site administrators will pull the indecent material when it is reported. But given the sheer number of submissions per hour you can't expect the censure to be instantaneous.

My question is where is the parental supervision?

These (sometimes preteen) kids are streaming video of themselves taking bong hits, shaking & grinding away to misogynistic hiphop music, doing jackass inspired stunts in and out of doors, making provocative yet seemingly demure personal testimonials about themselves and others to a potential audience of millions sight unseen!!

It's very hard to wrap my mind around the potential implications and the real consequences of what some of these kids are doing.

Very scary world now compared to the days of my youth.[xx(]

I'm thinking long and hard about how to both shield my kids from such predators while still allowing them to become members of the internet community.

Very well put.
I will add that if I trick someone into breaking the law, they are still breaking the law. These sting operations just get someone that was going to do something anyway. There should be more of the stings.

Both parents work in most homes. If you have a preteen or teen, - they're usually responsible enough to babysit the younger kids - we hope. They get out of school at 2:30, you get home at 5:30. There's 3 hours of unsupervised activity.

Remember when we were kids & the stuff we would try to get away with when parents weren't home. Now imagine the internet on top of that.
