What would You Do?

Your young daughter, lets say under 18, comes home crying every day. She has a large nose and the other kids just never let up to the point that she wants to not only quit school, but she says she wishes she was dead. Do you just let her deal with it or do you give her the cash for plastic surgery?

I'd fork over the cash for the nose job. I'm not a fan of plastic surgery, but kids can be F-N cruel, and I'd hate for any kid of mine to be ridiculed.

I sign her up for hockey, that'll fix it real quick! Seriously, I'd probably let her get her nose fixed. We have the means...we can rebuild her...

After going through high school and elementary school, I'd give the money if any of my kids felt bad about their appearance.

Oh for goodness' sakes. Kids under 18 should NOT be getting plastic surgery; their bodies are still growing and developing. Let a kid deal with their big nose, their flat chest, whatever--it's part of growing up, and it helps inure you to the hard knocks of life. Give me a break ! Think about how much we all might have gotten teased back in the day and we all turned out just fine. Well...most of us, anyway.[;)]

I agree with everything KYYX said. Absolutely no on the nose job.

Well put. You can't go to the plastic surgeon for a character augmentation.
From my own experience--my nose is on the largish size and, though I wasn't teased about it as a child/teen, I sometimes used it as a focus of my dissatisfaction about myself. (Mr. Hex, who has more honesty than discretion, once noted that my nose size is the first thing I'd need to change if I wanted to be more sterotypically pretty. Yes, he said that and lived.) I used to think that once I could afford it, I'd get my nose "fixed," but as I've gotten older I found that I've grown into it and it suits me. (This doesn't mean I'm not vain . . . I recently spent three years getting my mouth renovated, but that's functional, right? [:D])
In the last few years some of my friends have had "work" done, and I've noticed that they just keep going back for more--it's an unhealthy obsession. One went in for a nose job and the doctor actually said that first she should fix her chin, and then her jowls . . .

Everybody has real good points here. It is true that they are still growing when younger than 18. But..... I would pay for the nose job. I'm not saying getting your 14 year old a boob job is ok. I'm saying if it would be the nose, yes. If my kids are anything like me, they will remember every kid that teased them and plot revenge for years. I would not be able to handle my kid being taunted like that. Plus I want my kid to be happy. Kids can be very cruel. They can be so bad that they are passing bully laws all over the country. Although being ugly and teased may build your awareness about the knocks of real life, it can also crush a child. And I could never sit by when there is an answer. I really don't want my kids thinking like I do about their past.
Quick story: one of my good friends from childhood was teased way more than me to the point that the family moved. People would beat him up, fuck up his house..etc. We went to the same dojo for a few years then we lost touch. He went on to become a huge guy with a few black belts. (for the same reasons I did I will add) Anyway, he ran into one of our old neighbors that used to mess with him big time. He put the guy in the hospital. The moral is teasing can be very bad and change people for the worse. He is so filled with rage I stopped talking to him.
Teach your kids NEVER to tease people!

[/quote]I couldn't have said it better myself. While my daughters aren't teenagers yet......I would hope that they would've learned to deal with insults using self-assurance, confidence, poise, and lots of laughter. Easier said than done, though.

Also a good point. I can only imagine how hard it is to be a parent and know that one's child is being teased. Kids can be evil. And this, in my mind, is why it would be futile to resort to surgery in order to stop the teasing. If they stop teasing her about her nose, then they would tease her about her hair, or her butt . . . or about getting a nose job.

At that point I would go to her school and break every kids nose that bothered her. My kids are lucky enough to have a psycho for a father.[:D]

Oh I just asked my wife the same question about the nose job and she said "one word...Columbine" I am very suprised but she had a great point about teasing. We would all be better off if we teach our kids not to tease. But this thtread is kind of more about plastic surgery and would you do it for your kid.
